Suspect In Custody After Standoff In Hazelwood

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police have a suspect in custody after a standoff this afternoon in the city's Hazelwood neighborhood.

The incident came to an end just before 6 p.m. when 52-year-old Bruce Avery taken into custody.

Police officers and SWAT trucks were first called to the scene in the 5000-block of Orinoco Street around 3:50 p.m.

Police say Avery barricaded himself inside a home there and was threatening to blow it up.

The Bomb Squad was also called in, along with firefighters and EMS crews.

Officers evacuated nearby homes and turned off gas in the neighborhood.

Police say the situation started as a domestic issue and that the man's wife is no longer in the home.

Avery is facing charges of simple assault, harassment, terroristic threats and causing or risking a catastrophe
