'I Was Going To Drink': Woman Accused Of Leaving 2-Year-Old Home Alone

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A Pittsburgh woman is accused of leaving her two-year-old home alone, telling officers she was "going to drink."

Police were called to Gist Street around 12:30 a.m. Thursday to check on a toddler. A caller stated that there is an ongoing issue with the mother leaving the child alone.

Officers eventually found Corinna Scheffer, 38, outside and asked her where she was going, to which she replied: "I was going to drink."

Scheffer escorted police back to her home, where her 2-year-old was left sleeping in his crib. She was then taken into custody.

A corrections officer discovered a crack pipe during a cavity search at the Allegheny County Jail.

"She was just over the edge yesterday, a little bit.  She was very hyper yesterday.  Very hyper," said neighbor Bernie Dougherty.

Neighbors told police that CYF has been to the home multiple times, and that Scheffer is to be evicted next week.

"The police were called here several times.  I'm surprised they didn't do anything a long time ago," neighbor George Short said.

"It's sad.  I hope she'll never get the baby back.  Because shes not ready for baby, I don't think so," said neighbor Beryl Townsend.

Scheffer is charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
