Trooper Accused Of Exposing Self To Woman, Takes Own Life

GREENSBURG (KDKA) – A state trooper, accused of exposing himself to a woman on barracks property in Westmoreland County, has taken his own life.

According to state police, Trooper Eric Zona died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Thursday afternoon.

He was found in a wooded area along Torrance Road in Derry Township.

Zona was accused of exposing himself and allegedly performing a sexual act in front of the victim in a building on the grounds of the barracks in Greensburg.

During a preliminary hearing, the victim testified that she met Zona at the barracks to buy some items from a special state police store.

She said when she picked up items and asked for a discount, Zona allegedly exposed himself, saying he'd grant a price break if the victim touched him.

Zona's trial was scheduled for later this month. He had been a Pennsylvania State Trooper for 19 years, serving in Belle Vernon and Greensburg.

Zona's attorney said the allegations had a detrimental effect.

"It's a example of an allegation being made and a person's life coming to a grinding to a rather traumatic halt," said defense attorney Dick Galloway.
