Pittsburgh Police Investigating 2 Smash & Grab Robberies

LAWRENCEVILLE (KDKA) - Pittsburgh police are investigating two early Wednesday morning robberies.

The Buy and Fly convenience store in Highland Park was closed shortly the robbery happened, while Pittsburgh police conducted their investigation.

A short time later officers were called to Lawrenceville, for the report of another robbery.

Pittsburgh police say it was a customer who noticed the front door of the Buy and Fly was smashed, around 3:45a.m. Wednesday, and called police.

"At this point, we believe someone went into the gas station, opened the safe and took an undetermined amount of money," said Emily Schaffer, Assistant PIO, with the Pittsburgh Dept. of Public Safety.

Police officers from Zone 5 responded to the scene. A short time later, just after 6 a.m., police officers from Zone 2 were called - also to Butler Street., for another robbery, at the Glassworx Smoke and Vape Shop.

KDKA arrived at the scene as officers were talking to the owner of the business. The shattered glass of the front door littered the sidewalk and the front steps. A large rock could be seen on the floor, near the door. The owner told KDKA's Lisa Washington, approximately $1,000 worth of merchandise was stolen.

"We believe that three glass smoking pipes from the front window display were taken," Schaffer said.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from both locations and working to determine if the robberies may be connected.

"During the course of the investigation, if we're able to put two and two together and connect them we will, but they are being investigated separately," Schaffer said.
