Two Dead In Turnpike Crash Near Cranberry

CRANBERRY (KDKA) -- "You gotta hurry up because they're gonna kill somebody."

This is what frantic truck driver Patrick Willson told 911 while headed from Delaware to Iowa Saturday afternoon.

He noticed a wrong way driver on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

"I saw a little red car barreling down the road in the westbound passing lane, just flying," Willson said. "And the driver's looking straight forward. When the driver passed me, the driver didn't even look my way. About 10 cars passed me after that car passed, and I couldn't believe they didn't hit any of them. Then after those cars passed me, I started going and didn't see another car until I got to end of the Turnpike, to toll gate."

The crash backed up traffic for at least four hours. State police say the wrong way driver was headed east in the westbound lanes and struck another car head-on near mile marker 26.8 in Cranberry Township headed west in the westbound lane.

The wrong way driver was identified as Robert Humble, 85, of Cranberry. Sources say he had Alzheimer's and his son is a former Pennsylvania state trooper.

The driver of the black vehicle was identified as Helen O'Halloran, 56, of North Ridgeville, Ohio. They were both pronounced dead at the scene by the Butler County Coroner. Her passenger was James O'Halloran, 60, also from North Ridgeville, Ohio.

Firefighters say he was flown to UPMC Presbyterian hospital where he's in stable condition.

"With as much traffic as there is out there was probably no room to get out of the way," Willson said. "Start praying is the best thing you can do then."

Family members have all been notified. The crash is under investigation.
