Wilmerding Business Damaged By Fire, Small Explosion

WILMERDING (KDKA) - The Wilmerding fire captain says he called more firefighters to the scene because it was an early morning fire and he wanted to make sure he had enough firefighters, so it didn't get out of control.

Firefighters from seven fire departments were called to T and D Service Center on Airbrake Avenue in Wilmerding early Wednesday morning. A fire captain says a pile of old tires at the mechanic shop caught on fire around 7:30 a.m.

"By the time we arrived on scene, it got part of the building. Crews pulled lines, got the fire knocked down, got some extension to the roof and we got that under control," Wilmerding Fire Dept. Captain Tyler Beresford told KDKA's Lisa Washington.

Firefighters say most of the damage was outside of the building.

"Nothing is damaged inside other than a little water damage," said Cpt. Beresford. "There was an oil tank in the back. It exploded and ran down the road. We kept it mitigated."

The building has several surveillance cameras. Firefighters will review the video, as part of their investigation.

The business was closed when the fire began. The Wilmerding fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
