Young Man With Bone Cancer Gets Second Chance At Children’s Hospital

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A young man with bone cancer is getting a second chance, thanks to the dedicated staff at Children’s Hospital.

Colten Allison, of Bedford, wasn’t feeling very well when lower leg pain brought him to Children’s Hospital. He and his parents were shocked when an MRI revealed that he had bone cancer in his left leg.

“He had his surgery,” Dr. Ritchey explains. “They were able to remove the bone and put in a prosthesis, so that his leg is now getting more and more functional. Eventually, we hope he’s going to be able to walk and run like normal.”

Colten went through months of chemo, followed by surgery. Yet, the hospital staff managed to keep the family upbeat.

“I guess it’s become kind of our home away from home,” says the boy’s mother, Alicia Allison. “This has become our family away from family. We’ve never regretted our choice of coming here. The doctors, the nurses, the therapist, it’s been a very good experience, and they’ve taken good care of us the whole time.”

“I’m very thankful for everything they’ve done for me,” Colten adds. “To get me through this hard, hard time in my life.”

This is a good day for Colten. Not only has he had his 18th and final round of chemo, but he’s going home. In the meantime, his dad shows up with pizza. Life just got a whole lot better.
