Driver Crashes Into Aspinwall Business After Mixing Up Gas, Brakes

ASPINWALL (KDKA) -- A woman crashed through the front window of an Aspinwall chiropractor's office Friday morning after mistakenly slamming on the gas pedal instead of the brakes.

It happened just before 9 a.m. at the Newman Chiropractic center on Freeport Road.

A driver who was pulling into a parking space in front of the office thought she was hitting her brakes, but instead slammed on her gas pedal, jumped the curb and crashed straight through the office's front window.

"There was this poor elderly lady, she was still revving the engine, basically," chiropractor Daniel Doyle said. "I think she just still had her foot on the gas pedal."

Doyle said the woman seemed very disoriented after the crash.

"She got her car in park and turned it off," he said. "We gave her the thumbs up. She was feeling OK. We called 911 and had the police and fire department come."

The receptionist, Marta Dozzi, saw the whole thing happen from her desk just a few feet away.

"I jumped up and I think I screamed," she said. "It was loud. It was really loud. The people next door said they thought it was the train."

Dozzi says the woman who would have been sitting in the front office was on vacation this week to go hunting. The car crashed through one of her office walls and the woman's desk was thrown across the room and smashed.

"I called her right away," Dozzi said. "She just said the same thing, 'Thank God everybody's OK.' She's glad she wasn't there."

No patients were sitting in the waiting room at the time of the crash, and no one was injured.

Construction crews were still on the scene around 6 p.m. to clean up and make repairs.

The business will reopen on Monday.
