Charges Filed Against Student Accused Of Attacking Girl Wearing Hijab, 1 Other Student

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Charges have been filed against two students in connection to a fight at Chartiers Valley High School that was caught on video.

The video shows one girl arguing with then attacking another girl, who appeared to be wearing a hijab.

The student who attacked the other can be heard saying, "You're lucky you're from another language, because I will crush you, [expletive]."

The girl who is seen punching the other girl in the video is being charged with aggravated assault.

The student who recorded the video of the fight is charged with violating the Pennsylvania wiretap law.

KDKA's Kym Gable talked to David Shrager, who is the attorney for the girl who videotaped the fight.

"I saw the video like everybody else did on the internet before I was even involved and I was upset and disturbed by it," he said.

But, Shrager said police and the district attorney had to conduct a thorough investigation based on facts.

"They came to the conclusion that is the correct one. This is not about hate, about ethnicity, about religion. It was not an ethnic intimidation crime. It was not a hate crime. Had that been the case, they would have charged it that way. It just simply wasn't. The facts did not bear that out," Shrager said.

The Chartiers Valley School District released a statement after the incident saying the district "does not condone or tolerate violence of any kind and will enforce consequences to the fullest extent."

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, also released a statement calling for state and federal officials to investigate the incident for possible bias.

The organization said they would offer legal support to the family of the Muslim student. CAIR-Pittsburgh also said the Muslim student was later treated for a concussion and severe bruising.
