Roof Of Sunoco Gas Station In Monroeville Collapses

MONROEVILLE (KDKA) -- The roof of a Sunoco gas station in Monroeville collapsed Tuesday evening during high winds.

The National Weather Service estimated that wind gusts in the area at the time were close to 50 miles per hour. Two vehicles ended up beneath the huge canopy and its pillars.
"One gentleman was at the pump at the time, he had just stepped away and it collapsed," said Monroeville Fire Chief Scott Feyes.

The man was evaluated at the scene for injuries. He was shaken, but did not require hospitalization.
Pictures from the scene of the gas station, located at 1855 Haymaker Road, show the canopy collapsed on top of gas pumps and vehicles below.
There was no gasoline spill. Quick-thinking employees inside the mini-market service station immediately shut off power to the pumps.
The fire chief said the initial call indicated possible entrapment beneath the canopy, but first responders determined that was not the case.

According to the Monroeville Volunteer Fire Department, no one was injured during the collapse.
