COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - An officer who was a police spokesman in Ohio's capital city has avoided prison but will spend three months in jail on charges related to using child pornography.

Former Columbus officer Dean Worthington told the judge sentencing him Thursday that he takes responsibility for his behavior and there's no excuse.

A nine-year prison sentence is suspended as long as he follows the judge's orders. He must register as a sex offender for 25 years.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Franklin County Judge Mark Serrott said he considered Worthington's remorse and struggle with alcoholism in deciding the sentence.

The 52-year-old Worthington pleaded guilty to pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor and illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material.

Prosecutors say Worthington didn't create the child pornography found on his cellphone.
