PITCAIRN (KDKA) -- Nearly a dozen residents were forced out of their beds overnight when trees smashed through the roof at a Pitcairn apartment building.

KDKA learned the building on School Street is comprised of five apartments. Eight people walked out just before 3 a.m. Tuesday in their pajamas. The residents didn't even have time to grab shoes or pack bags.

The massive tree uprooted just before 2 a.m., and brought down other trees as a result. No one was injured.

Residents told KDKA they heard the sound of something cracking, and then within moments they were climbing over tree branches and debris to try to escape.

"I feel bad for anybody who got kicked out of their house for something like that," said Andy Johnson, neighbor.

Sunrise revealed a building blanketed in debris with limbs hanging off the side of the structure.

Johnson pulled his truck over to the side of the road after spotting the damage.

"I just came down the road and seen the whole thing swallowed the apartment, so it's just totally covered," said Johnson.

KDKA reached out to the landlord who told us he was putting the people up in a hotel in Monroeville overnight until crews could survey the damage.

The borough turned off the power to the building and police roped off the entrance with yellow caution tape.
