Woman, Former Boyfriend Sentenced In Baby's Death

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) - A judge has sentenced a West Virginia woman and her former boyfriend to prison in the death of her 7-month-old son.

The Dominion Post reports 20-year-old Julie Porreca and 41-year-old Edward Lee will spend 3-15 years behind bars after pleading guilty to child neglect resulting in death. Before the judge sentenced her, Porreca said through tears on Wednesday that she had done her best to care for the infant.

Police responded to a home on Sept. 4, 2016 for a reported baby in cardiac arrest. The boy died the same day he was hospitalized. Authorities say Porreca told police she gave him children's fever medication, but an autopsy revealed an adult antidepressant in his system.

A medical examiner determined the risk of death was created by a relationship that included medication and a pneumonia.
