Thompson Run Road Down To One Lane Due To Structural Concerns

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Part of a road in Ross Township is down to one lane after flooding has damaged it.

Thompson Run Road between Radcliff Drive and Babcock Boulevard in Ross Township is under an emergency closure due to concern about the structural integrity of one lane.

According to the Pittsburgh Department of Public Works, during an annual inspection of the lane on Thompson Run Bridge No. 3, a consultant discovered a stone abutment had washed away during recent storms making the southbound lane possibly structurally deficient.

Stops signs are going to be used to control traffic where the road becomes a single lane.

There is currently no time table for when a repair might occur or when the road will be completely reopened.

Drivers tell KDKA this isn't the first time they've seen problems with it.

"Every day I'm on this road, there's some sort of construction or some things happened, like every single day," said Ryan Kelly.

Ryan Kelly said he's familiar with Thompson Run Road. He travels on it almost daily because it's on his way to work.

"You can take Babcock into where I'm going but this is usually the easiest way to go or else I wouldn't take it," said Kelly.

It was just last night the Department of Public Works decided on an emergency closure of the Southbound lane because they discovered the bridge could be structurally deficient.

They said during an inspection, they found a section of stone abutment had washed away due to recent storms.

"Traffic is heavy in the afternoons, sometimes it's backed up, maybe a mile," said Kathy Bruce.

For Kathy Bruce, it's more of a safety concern and for children who live nearby.

"There's two bus stops up here for kids, and they've had multiple issues with this bridge. I'd like to see them get it straightened out," said Bruce.

And as for when the bridge will be fixed and for the road to reopen, that has yet to be determined from officials.
