New Study Links Sleeping With Lights On And Weight Gain In Women

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Dozing off to some late night TV or keeping that night light glowing might come with some heavy prospects.

New research shows that falling asleep with a lot of light is linked to an increased risk of weight gain and obesity.

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association analyzed the sleeping habits of nearly 44-thousand women in the U.S.

Those that sleep with a TV or light on in the room gained 11 pounds or more and had a body mass increase of about 10%, over 5 years.

Also a 22% chance of becoming overweight, and a 33% chance of becoming obese.

So should you cut the lights?

Removing TVs and tech devices from the bedroom supports a healthy sleeping environment.

Artificial light at night can throw off your body clock, and your metabolism.

This could explain why the chance of weight gain goes up.
