MCKEES ROCKS, Pa. (KDKA) — A teenager was wounded and a child was injured in a shooting in McKees Rocks.

According to Allegheny County Police, a 17-year-old was shot in the right arm and taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

An 8-year-old boy was also taken to the hospital after being grazed by a bullet in his lower right leg. He has since been released.

“When they arrived they found a 17-year-old male suffering from a single gunshot wound to his arm, and an 8-year-old child,” said Allegheny County Police Insp. Andrew Schurman.

The shooting happened just before 9:30 p.m. Tuesday night at the Hays Manor Apartment Complex on Locust Street. Investigators say a cook-out was going on and the child was standing outside Building 1 when he was grazed.

They say the intended target of the shooting was the teenager.

Insp. Schurman said the teen was standing down the block from the housing complex.

“He was standing in the 400 block of Locust Street when a vehicle arrived. Two people exited the vehicle and started shooting at the 17-year-old,” Insp. Schurman said.

But then he ran down towards the other building.

“My understanding is as the 17-year-old was running away from them, they pursued him a short distance and continued to shoot, which behind him would have been the housing complex,” Insp. Schurman said.

KDKA crews spotted police putting several evidence markers down on the ground and taking pictures of a taped off area along the road.

Allegheny County Police continue to investigate.

They are asking witnesses to come forward.

“So, we’re not sure what the motive was at the moment. We’re asking anyone in the area who heard or saw anything in relation to that vehicle or the events that precipitated the shooting to call the tip line,” Insp. Schurman said.

Anyone with information on the incident can call the Allegheny County Police tip line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS (1-833-255-8477).
