Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Making Plans To Reopen, Despite No Set Date

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - There is no set date for the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium to reopen but they are planning for that day, whenever it may come.

The zoo is doing more cleaning and planning to have more hand sanitizer readily available once guests can return.

They are also planning to limit tickets and times for guests to enter.

"We are looking at only allowing 500 people per hour to spread out over the park," said President and CEO of the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium Dr. Barbara Baker.

That's part of what the zoo is calling phase one of its reopening.

Included in that phase is keeping all indoor areas, like the aquarium and rainforest, closed in the interim.

Once reopened, at first, the playgrounds and indoor exhibits will remain closed.

"We are working with the governor's office, we are working with the county executive's office to try to make sure we are doing everything we need to do to be able to open safely and with all of the recommendations," said Baker.

That also means following CDC guidelines like sanitizing every two hours, wearing masks and keeping the areas where the animals live clean.

The zoo also has signs posted around the park to remind visitors to keep a safe distance and added paw prints on the ground so visitors know which direction to go when walking.
