Family Of 5 Displaced After House Fire Damages 3 Homes In Wilkinsburg

WILKINSBURG (KDKA) - Two adults and three children are now working with the Red Cross after being displaced due to a house fire in Wilkinsburg.

Pittsburgh firefighters had to battle flames at three homes on Laketon Road in Wilkinsburg Thursday morning after the flames spread from the first home to two others.

According to firefighters at the scene, the fire started in a vacant home and then spread to the homes on either side.

"When we showed up the fire was extending to the building on the right hand side," said Battalion Chief Richard Brutt. He added, "The fire spread to both exposures. The one on the left side was also vacant."

Flames could be seen coming from the tops of the homes. Even though two of the houses were empty, that didn't mean any less work for firefighters. Electrical wires were another challenge.

"It's directly in front of the first house," said Brutt. "They burned from the connection to the house and they were hanging in the way, so crews had to be cautious of that."

Firefighters had the fire under control in about an hour. The Red Cross is assisting the family of five.

One person, who may have been inside the vacant home, was taken to the hospital. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
