Pittsburgh Public Schools Providing Fresh Produce To Its Families
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It is the first day for fresh produce distribution for families in the Pittsburgh Public School District. The program will happen every Thursday for the next six months.
Families lined up outside The Gifted Center and four other Pittsburgh Public Schools Thursday morning to pick up boxes of fresh produce.
"This feels amazing," said Rebecca Davis, the food services supervisor for Pittsburgh Public Schools' high schools. "It's wonderful being able to service our community. It makes me feel good being able to provide for families in need."
The food comes from Paragon Foods, the largest specialty and produce supplier in Western Pennsylvania.
"Certainly, the biggest win is for the needy families that will be able to have nutritious fruits and vegetables," said Elaine Bellin, president and CEO of Paragon Foods, speaking last Friday at another produce distribution held by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
Each school received 375 boxes of produce. Each box is 23 to 25 pounds, and includes fruits and vegetables like carrots, onions, pears, apples, tomatoes and berries.
The distribution will continue at the schools every Thursday for the next six months.
The produce will be distributed at the following schools:
- Pittsburgh Carmelt
- Pittsburgh Faison
- Pittsburgh Milliones (UPrep)
- Pittsburgh Perry
- Pittsburgh Gifted Center
Families can begin lining up at 10 a.m. and the food will be placed in the trunks of their cars. They will run until noon. It will be a first-come, first-serve basis.
Families who aren't able to make it to the produce distribution should contact the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
