PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A 15-year-old is facing charges for allegedly bringing marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a knife into school.

State Police announced the charges on Sunday, saying a 15-year-old boy from Rochester Mills in East Mahoning Township, Indiana County was arrested Thursday.

According to their press release, the juvenile had a “green leafy substance” they suspected was marijuana. It was in a glass container, along with a smoking pipe, stainless steel smoking screens and a black knife.

The items were inside his bookbag, which police say had been brought into the school.

He was charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and prohibited offensive weapons on school property.

He announced on Twitter that he’s finished with the league.

Brown was recently released by the Patriots. He only played one game with New England before he was cut.

The Patriots released a statement saying, “The New England Patriots are releasing Antonio Brown. We appreciate the hard work of many people over the past 11 days, but we feel that it is best to move in a different direction at this time.”

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said Brown will likely forfeit his $9 million signing bonus from New England because of a contract clause calling for players to disclose situations preventing availability. He also said Brown was due $5 million on Monday.

Before Brown’s arrival in New England, he was playing with the Raiders. Brown had been fined over $200,000, and the Raiders voided the $29.125 million worth of guaranteed money that his deal had guaranteed, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Brown is currently facing sexual assault allegations from his former trainer and the NFL is looking into the allegations. He’s also facing multiple other lawsuits.

Another woman accused Brown of sexual misconduct in a 2017 incident. That woman also reportedly claims Brown sent her “intimidating” texts after her story appeared in Sports Illustrated.

In a new article published Sept. 19, the magazine reported the woman’s lawyer wants the NFL and the Patriots to do something about it.

In the original SI story released Monday, the woman said she was hired by Brown in 2017 to paint a mural in his home outside of Pittsburgh but was fired when she rejected his sexual advances.

In a statement to KDKA, the lawyers representing the woman released a statement on the Patriots releasing Brown, saying:

“The NFL and the Patriots clearly took our client’s concerns seriously. She wanted the threats and intimidation to stop and we hope that will be case. The NFL has assured us that regardless of Antonio Brown’s roster status, it will continue to investigate all claims regarding his behavior.

“We are gratified that the NFL recognized that it has an important role to play in policing player conduct that is sexually harassing and threatening.“

In that same article, SI reported that a Monroeville doctor filed a lawsuit against Brown for $11,500 in unpaid fees.

Dr. Victor Prisk also claimed that Brown repeatedly farted in his face and laughed about it during a consultation where he showed up three hours late.

According to the SI report Friday, Brown allegedly included the woman in a series of text messages sent Wednesday night “claiming she was only out for money, asking others to look into her background, and including a photo of her kids.”

While Antonio Brown has sworn off the NFL, his agent Drew Rosenhaus was singing a different song just a few days ago.

On Friday, he said Brown was in good shape and “looking forward to his next opportunity in the NFL.”

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police say multiple people have died, and several others are hospitalized after an incident on Pittsburgh’s South Side.

Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich says three are dead and four are hospitalized.

According to the Public Safety director, five were found in a Southside Works City Apartments and one in an elevator. The seventh victim was found at the corner of 26th Street and East Carson Street.

One man was 33-years-old, and Public Safety says the others were around the same age.

All the victims were wearing orange paper wrist bands, and police said they were aware of two Pittsburgh venues that used orange wrist bands Saturday night. After further investigation, it was determined that an event with orange wrist bands was not related to the deaths and injuries.

They believe this was an isolated drug-overdose event, not a widespread situation.

Police say they want to stress that this isn’t a case of drugs being passed around at a large venue in a way that could have affected other people.

However, they say they are concerned about a “tainted, potentially deadly batch of drugs.”

“But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t some bad drugs going around elsewhere,” said Pittsburgh Police Commander Jason Lando.

“We have nothing to put us in that direction right now.”

Three of the victims were upgraded to stable condition, and one is still in critical condition.

Police said that the victims took drugs at a different place, not a venue that would have had an orange band.

The City Clubs Apartments Manager issued a statement, saying that the individuals involved weren’t residents at the building.

The statement reads:

“The individuals that were involved in the incident were not residents of our community. It is our understanding that they were acquaintances of a resident in good standing. It is also our understanding that the group had attended an outside event before returning to the apartment.

We express our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the affected individuals and send our thoughts and prayers to those who were transported to the hospital.

We are working closely with the local authorities. As this is an ongoing police investigation, all questions should be directed to the Pittsburgh Police Department.”

Police say they aren’t sure what the drug is. But they don’t expect to see overdoses all over the city, even if there’s the possibility of a bad batch going around.

“So we are not in a situation where we expect people to be found in an overdosed state all over the city,” Lando said.

HARRISBURG (KDKA)– The Pennsylvania Departments of Agriculture and Health are advising residents to take extra precautionary measures to avoid mosquito bites.

Officials say Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) is a rare mosquito-transmitted viral infection and it has been confirmed in Carbon, Monroe, and Erie Counties.

EEE can be potentially fatal to birds, horses, and humans.

The CDC says there have been 18 reported cases across the country in 2019. Most fatal cases have been reported in the Mid-Atlantic states.

Symptoms for the disease include a high fever of 103 degrees or higher, a stiff neck, headache, and lack of energy. Most symptoms typically last 3-10 days.

Symptoms for horses include fever, circling, drooping ears, hyperactivity, paralysis, abdominal gait, and aimless wandering. Horse owners are advised to vaccinate their horses.

Residents are advised to use insect repellents and cover exposed skin when outdoors. They should also make sure windows and screen doors are sealed to prevent mosquitos from entering their homes.

Because of its high mortality rate in humans and horses, this mosquito-transmitted disease is regarded as one of the most serious in the United States.

Here are some simple steps to eliminate standing water that could attract mosquitos:

• Remove tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots, discarded tires or any object that could collect standing water. Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers left outdoors.
• Clean roof gutters annually, particularly if leaves from nearby trees tend to clog the drains.
• Turn over plastic wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use.
• Do not let water stagnate in birdbaths.
• Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish.
• Clean and chlorinate swimming pools and remove standing water from pool covers.
• Use landscaping to eliminate standing water that collects on your property.
• Treat standing water that cannot be eliminated with Bti products, which are sold at outdoor supply, home improvement, and other stores. Bti is a natural product that kills mosquito larvae but is safe for people, pets, aquatic life, and plants.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Multiple people are facing criminal charges after a video of an assault at a gas station went viral on social media.

Pittsburgh Police say multiple people now face criminal charges after a fight on the 2500 block of Brighton Road on Friday just before 7 p.m.

Police say the fight occurred between the men who own the Exxon gas station and two female customers.

On Saturday, protestors surrounded the Pittsburgh gas station, shutting down the business after footage of the fight went viral.

One lane of traffic is blocked, causing congestion.

According to police, their investigation revealed that a verbal confrontation began over spilled gas.

The customers said a pump malfunctioned, and when they asked for a refund, police say they were reportedly denied one.

The video, police say, shows the owners striking one of the women in the back of the head multiple times.

The employee is also reportedly shown grabbing one of the women by the hair and dragging her across the pavement.

The victims, who did not want to be identified, spoke with KDKA’s Chris Hoffman.

“It was just me and my sister against all those grown men,” the 27-year-old said. Her sister is 25.

“There’s no way that you should be able to put your hands on females like this and still be able to run a business. Especially in our community where I grew up.”

When police looked at surveillance footage, they say the women initiated the confrontation inside before it moved outside.

Police say they recommend the owners and employee be charged with assault. If the DA determines the charges should be upgraded to aggravated assault, police say they’ll amend the paperwork.

In a press release, police called the video “disturbing.”

“Calling me ‘animal,’ the victim said. “Saying, ‘if you want to act like an animal, I’m going to treat you like an animal,’ as they were pulling my hair trying to pull me out of the store.”

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – For the first time in nearly a week, there’s some incoming rain on the radar.

A few showers finally appeared on the radar this morning, but they were fleeting.

Pittsburgh woke up to temperatures in the mid to high 50s and mid 60s, a little warmer than average for this time of September.

KDKA Meteorologist Kristin Emery says we could see a few more spotty, isolated showers pop up later this afternoon as the day warms up and there’s a bit more moisture in the air.

Bridgeville Fire Department has put an 8,000-gallon water buffalo in place for residents at 370 Commercial Street in Bridgeville. Those in need of water only need to bring a container to carry the water.

The break happened around 5 a.m. Friday morning in the 400 block of East Agnew Avenue when a 24-inch water main broke. The water flowed until it was shut off around 11:30 a.m.

The Red Cross said three homes were directly impacted by the break. All three homes were evacuated.

According to Pittsburgh Public Safety, two people and several pets had to be rescued.

Penn American said they had to find the valve that was under the rushing water, which was why it took so long to shut the water off.

There was so much water lost, the South Hills and southern Allegheny County communities lost pressure for most of the day.

About 35 communities are under a boil water advisory that’s expected to last until at least Sunday.

CARRICK (KDKA) — A major water main break in Carrick has shut down several road and closed schools and businesses across the South Hills Friday morning.

What looked like raging rapids gushed down streets for hours, impacting roads, homes, businesses, schools and more. The water was finally shut off around 11:30 a.m., six-and-a-half hours after it began to gush. It happened on Agnew Avenue and Becks Run Road.

Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich estimates the hole left behind from the water main break to be about 25 feet deep. The damage is extensive and the road will be closed indefinitely.

Officials said the valve needed to shut off the water was under the rushing water.

“We had to back up quite a few valves in order to create a safe work environment to do a shutoff,” said Gary Lobaugh from Pennsylvania American Water

The approved detour route for Beck Run is Carson Street to Glass Run Road to Churchview Avenue to Brownsville Road and back to Becks Run.

Penn American Water has released the following statement to its customers that includes details of a Precautionary Boil Water Advisory:

“Pennsylvania American Water crews are working to restore service to affected areas as quickly as possible following a water main break this morning that is causing low pressure and water outages in your area. We currently do not have a timeline for restoration, but we will contact you again with an update when more information is available.

“In the meantime, the company has issued a precautionary boil water advisory for customers in your area due to low system pressure and low system storage. When service is restored, water should be boiled for a minimum of one minute before consumption and food preparation until further notice.”

According to Allegheny County’s Twitter feed, crews isolated the break and restoration is underway. Penn American Water is hoping to have service restored for all customers by this evening. That estimate could change given the changing circumstances.

Then, the Boil Water Advisory will be in place for at least 48 hours following the final restorations.

The Pittsburgh Public Safety Department is telling residents to avoid the area near 400 block of Agnew Avenue and Becks Run Road. They say it is a 24-inch main that broke.

Pennsylvania American Water said approximately 30 customers are without service in the East Agnew area. Service is expected to return Saturday afternoon.

For that, Duquesne Light crews are on the scene.

A company spokesperson issued this statement about the situation: “Duquesne Light is aware of and actively responding to the water main break in Carrick. As a safety precaution, crews have proactively turned the power off to 27 customers affected by the incident. Once Penn American Water isolates the issue, Duquesne Light crews will work as quickly and safely as possible to repair poles damaged by the incident and restore power to all affected customers.”

Several schools have also had to shut down due to water problems, including Keystone Oaks School District and St. Bernard’s in Mount Lebanon.

The Red Cross is also on the scene, helping the residents impacted and evacuated.

Officials said 10 homes were impacted and three homes received heavy damage and are not sure if they can be saved.

Pennsylvania American Water has collected several water samples and said the results will be available tomorrow evening. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, two consecutive days of clean tests must occur for the boil advisory to be lifted.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — According to reports, Felipe Vázquez could be facing deportation back to Venezuela if convicted of child sex crimes he is facing in both Pennsylvania and Florida.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is aware of the situation in Pittsburgh and is monitoring the case closely.

“‘ICE is aware of the charges and is closely monitoring the case’ of Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Felipe Vázquez — though it’s far from certain they could remove him to his native Venezuela.”

Vázquez is currently being held in the Allegheny County Jail after being denied bond earlier in the week following the arrest of the Pirates closer.

Vázquez was arrested just after 11 a.m. Tuesday in Pittsburgh on a felony warrant out of Lee County, Florida. Vázquez, 28, of Saint Cloud, Florida, is facing charges of computer pornography – solicitation of a child and one count of providing obscene material to minors. He was arrested at The Yards at 3 Crossings apartments.

On Tuesday afternoon, Vazquez’s bond was denied, and he’s facing additional charges out of Westmoreland County of statutory sexual assault, unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of minors and indecent assault of a person less than 16-years-old, court records show.

The Journal spoke to a member of the Pirates organization, who confirmed that Vázquez does have a green card to work and live in the United States legally. But, if Vázquez is sentenced to jail time, he would be released immediately to ICE officials following the completion of his sentence.

Vázquez is expected to be arraigned next week, with a hearing set for September 25th regarding whether or not the player will be extradited to Florida.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Young people from around the world, including here in Pittsburgh, are expected to turn out in large numbers to strike for climate action.

Workers and students worldwide are expected to walk out of classes and work on Friday.

However, here in Pittsburgh, there appears to be two separate messages – one from the Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent and Mayor Bill Peduto.

Both sent tweets Thursday night aimed at parents and students.

Mayor Peduto said he’ll make himself available for a half an hour tomorrow on the portico of the City-Council building to sign permission slips for students that want to participate.

The mayor supports the students’ right to take part and says his tweet was tongue-in-cheek, but his office is unsure on if they can legally sign permission slips for them.

They are exploring those options.

Pittsburgh Public Schools, while supporting a student’s right to lawfully protest, reminded parents that students must continue to follow the district’s early dismissal policy.

The school reiterated that any student that leaves without a signed, written parent/guardian permission slip will receive an unexcused tardy or absence from school.

The strikes are being organized by young people in cities nationwide, similar to the school walkouts that happened last year combating gun violence.

An 18-year-old from Upper St. Clair Leandra Mira has been at the center of the “Fridays For The Future” movement in Pittsburgh.

The Global Climate Justice Strike is a movement started by 16-year-old Greta Thunberg from Sweden, who started the Global Young People For Climate Action and Justice movement.

The strike in Pittsburgh Friday is set to feature a large-scale sit-in at the City Council Building and feature speakers from the Pittsburgh area organizations involved in global climate change and reform.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — For Stacey Hester sleep can be hard to come by.

“I’m always so busy, and here, here, here, and here,” she said. “Being able to shut my brain off, to actually even go to sleep was a problem.”

She tried melatonin, Benadryl, and Ambien.

“It would make me feel very drowsy, I still wouldn’t be able to shut my brain off,” she recalled. “I would even try things, you know, like sing a song, count my breaths, count imaginary sheep.”

She thought about white noise and the ocean. Then it dawned on her, maybe her phone could help. She tried different apps with calming sounds for bedtime. Some sounds weren’t realistic.

Then she found an app she loves.

“Rainstorm, it has city atmosphere sounds, it has waves, it has thunder, it has birds, it has all these different ones, and you can mix and match them together,” she said.

Her favorite combination?

“Slow waves, with rain and thunder, it sounds like a thunderstorm on the beach,” she said.

She also likes that she can set the app on a timer. It used to take her hours to fall asleep. Now it takes just thirty minutes.

If she happens to wake up in the middle of the night, she won’t be annoyed by a sound app on continuous play.

The best part is the app is free.

Allegheny Health Network sleep specialist, Dr. Daniel Shade, has this advice: if you use an app to help you sleep, don’t use your phone as a phone.

“You don’t want to be getting calls in the middle of the night, you don’t want to be answering texts,” Dr. Shade said.

Also, be careful about apps that claim to track your sleep. They’re often linked to a watch or something you wear to bed.

They detect movement to correlate to being asleep or being awake, but that isn’t always accurate and doesn’t give any information about the quality of sleep.

Patients often ask Dr. Shade which bedtime apps are best.

“Find one that you think is soothing to you,” Dr. Shade recommends. “Try it for a while and see if you feel better in the morning. I can’t tell you whether you’re going to be getting more deep sleep or more REM sleep, but if you feel better, great.”

As for Stacey, Rainstorm has done just that.

“I tend to wake up feeling like I’m ready to go through the day now,” Stacey said.

CLAIRTON (KDKA) — A bed bugs outbreak is disrupting classes for the rest of the week in the Clairton City School District.

Students are being dismissed early today, at 11:30 a.m., and Friday’s classes are canceled.

After-school activities are also canceled.

Closing down the school will allow an exterminator to come in to spray inside classrooms and other areas. Multiple classrooms are being inspected.

The district is also asking parents to inspect their children’s belongs including their backpacks and clothing.

District officials say Friday night’s high school football game at Neil C. Brown Stadium will go on as scheduled at 7 p.m.

School is set to resume on Monday morning.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A bright object will be visible in the Western Pennsylvania sky tonight.

Wednesday evening’s clear skies will provide an opportunity to see the International Space Station as it flies over Western Pennsylvania.

It will look like a bright, moving star or a plane without blinking lights.

The Pittsburgh area will see the ISS between 8:00 pm and 8:03 pm, and these times are exact.

The space station will become noticeable in the SSE sky, about 10 degrees above the horizon.

From there, the International Space Station will travel to the ESE sky before disappearing 12 degrees above the horizon.

The station is visible many times, throughout the year, in many places across the world.

UPDATE (Sept. 19, 2019) —

A judge released Jamie Easley from jail Thursday on electronic ankle monitoring. He is also to have no contact with the victim or witness.

The Allegheny County District’s Attorney’s Office released a statement, saying:

SHALER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — A Shaler Township man is facing child abuse charges after his newborn daughter was admitted to UPMC Children’s Hospital with severe injuries.

Jamie Easley, 40, is facing felony charges of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children.

According to police, the 4-week-old girl was taken to Children’s Hospital last Wednesday after her primary care doctor found multiple bruises on her face and abdomen.

The child’s mother told the doctor the little girl had not eaten in nearly two days.

KDKA’s Meghan Schiller Reports:

At the hospital, doctors found the girl had skull fractures, subdural hemorrhages, 19 rib fractures, and other fractures to her left arm and her legs. She was admitted in critical condition to the hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Her condition has since improved to serious.

“We got some news that the child may be improving, and we are hoping for a full recovery,” Luteniant Sean Frank with the Shaler police said.

Neighbors say the family had just moved into house in Shaler.

According to the criminal complaint, Easley told investigators during a police interview that the baby’s older sibling pulled her off a bed. However, doctors said a fall from a bed would not cause the kind of injuries she had.

Police say Easley later told them he grabbed the baby girl by the arm while she was crying, held her up, squeezed her and gave her “a quick shake.” Soon after, the baby stopped crying.

Easley is now being held in the Allegheny County Jail.

“Our heartfelt sadness goes out to this child,” Frank said. “Most of our officers have children and some have grandchildren and it’s really a gut-wrenching situation we’re dealing with”

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP/KDKA) — Senate officials say a Pennsylvania state lawmaker who is facing child pornography possession charges has resigned.

Sen. Mike Folmer’s apparent resignation Wednesday came hours after he was arrested by the state attorney general’s office. Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati and Senate Majority Leader Jake Corman said in statement that they received Folmer’s resignation letter after they spoke with him to insist on it.

The state attorney general’s office charged Folmer late Tuesday with possession of child pornography and criminal use of a communication facility, both felonies.

Investigators allegedly found two images of child pornography on Folmer’s cell phone after they asked him to turn it over at his house in Lebanon County. Authorities were acting on a tip from a social media website.

The 63-year-old Folmer and his lawyer haven’t returned messages.

Both Gov. Tom Wolf and state Auditor General Eugene DePasquale called for Folmer’s resignation.

Wolf, a Democrat, said in a statement Wednesday morning that the charges against Republican Sen. Folmer are disgusting and beyond comprehension, and that Folmer should immediately resign.

DePasquale said in a statement: “The vile, disgusting charges against Mike Folmer are beyond shocking and warrant his immediate resignation from the Senate,” DePasquale said. “People in leadership positions must be held to a higher standard and Folmer has no business holding a position of public trust.”

Loaded BBQ Fries

Ingredients:

• 1 package frozen Fast Food French fries
• ½ (16 ounce) container pulled pork – heated
• 1 cup shredded Pepper Jack cheese (or more to taste)
• 2 plum tomatoes, diced
• ½ sweet onion, diced
• 1 bunch of green onions, chopped
• Barbeque sauce, for drizzling

Directions:

Preheat oven according to French fry package instructions and cook French fries until crisp and browned.

Turn the oven to broil.

Remove from the oven and cover fries with pulled pork and cheese.

Place the pan back in the oven and broil until the cheese is melted. Remove from the oven and top with the chopped tomatoes, onion and green onions.

Drizzle with barbecue sauce and dig in!

Serves: 8

Greek Feta Dip

Ingredients:

• 12 ounces feta cheese
• 1 cup Greek yogurt
• 1 (8 ounce) block cream cheese, softened
• 2 large cloves of garlic – minced
• ¼ cup Greek extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling
• Juice and zest of 1 lemon (or more to taste)
• Kosher salt
• Crushed Calabrian Chili Peppers to taste
• 2 tablespoons freshly chopped dill, plus more for garnish
• ¾ cup chopped Kalamata olives
• ½ cup chopped cucumber
• ½ cup cherry tomatoes – cut into quarters
• Pita chips, for serving

Directions:

In a large bowl using a hand mixer, beat feta cheese, Greek yogurt, cream cheese, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice and zest until fluffy and combined. Season with salt and add in the crushed chili peppers to taste. Stir in dill.

Transfer dip to a serving bowl and top with chopped Kalamata olives, cucumber, tomatoes and a drizzle of olive oil. Garnish with dill.

Serve with pita chips.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A Pittsburgh area doctor is the latest to file a lawsuit against former Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown.

Monroeville’s Dr. Victor Prisk has filed a lawsuit in Pennsylvania claiming that Brown owes him $11,500 in unpaid fees.

Not only that, according to the NY Post, Dr. Prisk claims Brown repeatedly farted in his face and laughed about it during a consultation where he showed up three hours late.

Dr. Prisk said he was wary of signing Brown because of his “flighty” reputation for not paying his bills, Sports Illustrated reported.

TMZ even obtained video of the appointment in August of 2018 where Brown can be heard farting and laughing about it as Prisk tests his body fat.

“It seemed just childish to me,” Prisk told Sports Illustrated. “I’m a doctor and this man is farting in my face.”

Prisk runs Prisk Orthopaedics and Wellness in Monroeville, he filed the suit earlier this month.

The new allegations are part of a Sports Illustrated report in which another woman accused Brown of sexual misconduct in 2017 in Pittsburgh.

The first accusation came days after the wide receiver was released from the Oakland Raiders and signed with the New England Patriots hours later.

His former trainer filed a federal lawsuit against Brown, accusing him of three separate accounts of sexual assault and rape.

Now, the Sports Illustrated report details the story of an anonymous woman who claims she was hired by Brown to paint a mural of him in his Pittsburgh home.

According to the report, Brown flirted with her and made her uncomfortable before the atmosphere “curdled.”

The woman told Sports Illustrated that she was kneeling and painting when she turned to find Brown standing behind her “naked, holding a small hand towel over his genitals.”

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Emmy has had chronic pain for 20 years along her spine and in her joints.

She had taken opiates in the past, but stopped. However, she still needed help.

Through Allegheny Health Network’s Enhanced Pain Management Program, she got acupuncture, counseling and massage.

“Right afterwards, you feel kind of relaxed. And then maybe a little bit after that, you feel some relief,” Emmy says. “That really helps me because she actually puts her hands on your body and works out the painful parts. And it’s not a whole ton of relief. I think everyone is different with all these things. But it helps.”

“A counselor will give you tools to help you manage your pain,” she adds. “It’s not a magic pill, it’s not a magic cure, it’s not one procedure. It’s, like, multiple things.”

While Emmy was not on narcotics when she came into the program, it can also benefit people who want to stop taking them, or who find themselves cut off.

“Some physicians are concerned about continuing to prescribe,” says Dr. Jack Kabazie, a pain specialist at West Penn Hospital.

Some people hesitate getting help, because of the muscle pain, sweating, nausea and anxiety of opiate withdrawal.

“The potential is that they go to the street,” Dr. Kabazie says. “We should be weaning the patient slowly off the opioids, and coming up with another treatment path.”

The idea is to treat the entire patient, physically and psychologically, all in one place.

“We have addiction medicine, we have medication management, we have acupuncture, we have medical massage, we have nutrition, we have weight loss, we have medical marijuana,” he said.

It’s intensive, with the patient at the Pain Center near West Penn Hospital most days — medical massage once a week for six weeks, acupuncture two times a week, group or individual therapy, then a reevaluation.

“In the meantime, we are weaning people off of opioids as we move through this program,” Dr. Kabazie said.

Since august 2018, about 300 patients have been treated. Because the regimen is still evolving, success rates haven’t been tracked. But Dr. Kabazie has seen improvement in the patients’ anxiety, depression, and function scores. Also, opioid use in total is down by 15 percent.

“We’re moving in the right direction,” he says, “There has to be a metric that we can actually say this is working.

Insurance companies are looking for that metric, that data point, that number. Without it, coverage is inconsistent.

“Getting someone to change their behavior — you can’t do that in a week, a month, sometimes a year. Progress and not perfection, as we say in the addiction world,” Dr. Kabazie said.

Luckily for Emmy…

“My doctor told me that there is a special grant and I was able to get these three things and they weren’t any charge,” she said.

And if the grant runs out one day?

“After that, I guess we’ll just wait and see what happens,” Emmy said.
