PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A man is facing multiple charges after he allegedly hit his partner, held her a knife to her and threatened to kill her.

According to police, 23-year-old Timothy Moore and his partner got into an altercation at a home along Woodlow Street in Crafton Heights early Saturday morning.

Moore allegedly threatened to take their child after he learned his partner was going to request a protection from abuse against him.

He is facing charges of terroristic threats, assault, strangulation, and stalking.

HOMESTEAD (KDKA) — The annual Fall Fest was underway at the Waterfront Shopping Center and the main attraction was The Great “Pup-Kin” Race.

As the event kicked off the start of fall, patrons were encouraged to bring their small dogs along to participate in a race.

Dogs 25 pounds or less dressed as pumpkins took off between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m.

Those in attendance were also treated to a pumpkin patch, a performance from House of Soul and several fall activities.

Donations were also collected for the Humane Animal Rescue.

BUTLER (KDKA) — Police were on the scene of a bear sighting at a home on the south side of the city.

Just before 11:00 p.m., police arrived to find a bear eating from the bird feeder of the home.

Police advised residents to say inside their homes and allow the bear to move along.

After about 20 minutes, the bear ate its fill and wandered off.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — After a major water main break affected several neighborhoods, crews are now working to repair Becks Run Road.

According to Pennsylvania American Water, they anticipate the road will be open for normal traffic for Monday morning’s commute.

The water main break occurred Friday morning in Carrick on Agnew Avenue and Becks Run Road, causing the road to close.

Rushing water caused several homes to be damaged following the break, including one woman’s home that was directly in the path of the rapids.

Along with road work, crews have been hard at work around the clock to make sure water service was restored and the boil advisory lifted.

There is no word on when Agnew Avenue will reopen.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A 15-year-old is facing charges for allegedly bringing marijuana, drug paraphernalia and a knife into school.

State Police announced the charges on Sunday, saying a 15-year-old boy from Rochester Mills in East Mahoning Township, Indiana County was arrested Thursday.

According to their press release, the juvenile had a “green leafy substance” they suspected was marijuana. It was in a glass container, along with a smoking pipe, stainless steel smoking screens and a black knife.

The items were inside his bookbag, which police say had been brought into the school.

He was charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and prohibited offensive weapons on school property.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger won’t have to undergo the Tommy John surgery, and he is expected to be back for the 2020 season.

According to EPSN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Roethlisberger’s elbow injury is unclear, but it won’t require a Tommy John surgery.

Tommy John surgery is a surgical procedure where a healthy tendon is extracted and then used to replace a torn ligament.

Citing a league source, Schefter says Roethlisberger should be ready to go for the 2020 season.

Roethlisberger had the same sentiment, saying in a statement on Sept. 16 that he expects to be ready to go as soon as possible.

He said, in part:

“This is shocking and heartbreaking for me, to miss this much of a season and feel like I am letting down so many people. I can only trust God’s plan, but I am completely determined to battle through this challenge and come back stronger than ever next season. The Steelers committed three years to me this offseason and I fully intend to honor my contract and reward them with championship level play. I will do all I can to support Mason and the team this season to help win games. I love this game, my teammates, the Steelers organization and fans, and I feel in my heart I have a lot left to give.”

The Steelers haven’t said which part of Roethlisberger’s elbow was injured.

A local doctor says after Roethlisberger undergoes surgery, advances in medicine will allow for faster healing.

“Now we’re pushing those limits a little bit more, where you’re starting to see the throwing phase of therapy occur between the six and 12-week mark and the full return placed somewhere between the six and nine-month mark,” he told KDKA in an earlier interview.

The protests began Saturday morning after a fight on the 2500 block of Brighton Road on Friday just before 7 p.m.

The protest was sparked by a violent video that went viral on social media.

Police say the fight occurred between the men who own the Exxon gas station and two female customers.

According to police, their investigation revealed that a verbal confrontation began over spilled gas.

The customers said a pump malfunctioned, and when they asked for a refund, police say they were reportedly denied one.

The video, police say, shows the owners striking one of the women in the back of the head multiple times.

The employee is also reportedly shown grabbing one of the women by the hair and dragging her across the pavement.

When police looked at surveillance footage, they say the women initiated the confrontation inside before it moved outside.

WHITEHALL (KDKA) – A car burst into flames in a local fire company’s parking lot.

On Sunday, the Whitehall Borough Police Department said that a group was riding in a vehicle overnight.

According to police, the car pulled over when they smelled gasoline.

The next minute, their car was engulfed in flames.

Police and firefighters were called, and police say the volunteers extinguished the fire.

There were no injuries.

“When the fire siren activates, that is the universal signal for firefighters to respond to the fire station, don protective equipment, and drive the fire apparatus to the scene of an emergency,” the Facebook post reads.

“But last night, the customary response cycle changed when the emergency was delivered to the fire station.”

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police are warning the public about the possibility of a deadly batch of drugs going around Pittsburgh.

The warning comes after three people were found dead and four others were hospitalized in South Side. Police said the incidents were related to drug overdoses.

While all the victims were wearing orange event wrist bands, police say the incident was an isolated drug-overdose event, so anyone who attended a Pittsburgh event and received an orange wrist band has no cause for concern.

They don’t believe the overdoses were a widespread situation where a bad batch of drugs could have been distributed to a large number of people at a large Pittsburgh event.

However, police say they are concerned about a “tainted, potentially deadly batch of drugs.”

They say they want to remind people not to do drugs.

“Don’t do illegal drugs,” Pittsburgh Police Commander Jason Lando says.

You don’t know what’s in them, and it could end up in a dire situation.”

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – After Antonio Brown was released from the Patriots and said he’s done with the NFL, he took to Twitter to call out Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

Roethlisberger was once facing rape and sexual assault accusations from two different women.

Tensions have been high between former Steeler Brown and Roethlisberger, and after Brown went to Oakland, he said Big Ben was never his friend. “Just had to get my ends,” Brown said about their relationship.

On Sunday, days after being dropped by the Patriots, Brown announced on Twitter that he’s finished with the league.

Brown is not only facing rape and sexual misconduct accusations, but he’s also facing multiple lawsuits.

Squirrel Tunnel inbound was shut down. Fire and EMS were present and State Police were also responding.

There is no word on injuries, but the Parkway is now back open.

MUDDY CREEK TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) – A 22-year-old is dead after a vehicle rollover in Butler County.

A 22-year-old man was driving north on Interstate 79 on Friday when he lost control of the vehicle, police announced Sunday.

According to police, he over-corrected and crossed the roadway, hitting the embankment.

The car then flipped over, and police say the man was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was identified as Joshua Travis, 22, of Allison Park.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – It’s the last day of summer, and Pittsburgh is going out in style.

KDKA Meteorologist Kristin Emery says temperatures will hit the mid to upper 80s again today before autumn arrives at 3:50 a.m. Monday morning.

There will be plenty of sunshine and warm, humid conditions before a cold front moves in.

Brown was recently released by the Patriots. He only played one game with New England before he was cut.

The Patriots released a statement saying, “The New England Patriots are releasing Antonio Brown. We appreciate the hard work of many people over the past 11 days, but we feel that it is best to move in a different direction at this time.”

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said Brown will likely forfeit his $9 million signing bonus from New England because of a contract clause calling for players to disclose situations preventing availability. He also said Brown was due $5 million on Monday.

Before Brown’s arrival in New England, he was playing with the Raiders. Brown had been fined over $200,000, and the Raiders voided the $29.125 million worth of guaranteed money that his deal had guaranteed, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Brown is currently facing sexual assault allegations from his former trainer and the NFL is looking into the allegations. He’s also facing multiple other lawsuits.

Another woman accused Brown of sexual misconduct in a 2017 incident. That woman also reportedly claims Brown sent her “intimidating” texts after her story appeared in Sports Illustrated.

In a new article published Sept. 19, the magazine reported the woman’s lawyer wants the NFL and the Patriots to do something about it.

In the original SI story released Monday, the woman said she was hired by Brown in 2017 to paint a mural in his home outside of Pittsburgh but was fired when she rejected his sexual advances.

In a statement to KDKA, the lawyers representing the woman released a statement on the Patriots releasing Brown, saying:

“The NFL and the Patriots clearly took our client’s concerns seriously. She wanted the threats and intimidation to stop and we hope that will be case. The NFL has assured us that regardless of Antonio Brown’s roster status, it will continue to investigate all claims regarding his behavior.

“We are gratified that the NFL recognized that it has an important role to play in policing player conduct that is sexually harassing and threatening.“

In that same article, SI reported that a Monroeville doctor filed a lawsuit against Brown for $11,500 in unpaid fees.

Dr. Victor Prisk also claimed that Brown repeatedly farted in his face and laughed about it during a consultation where he showed up three hours late.

According to the SI report Friday, Brown allegedly included the woman in a series of text messages sent Wednesday night “claiming she was only out for money, asking others to look into her background, and including a photo of her kids.”

While Antonio Brown has sworn off the NFL, his agent Drew Rosenhaus was singing a different song just a few days ago.

On Friday, he said Brown was in good shape and “looking forward to his next opportunity in the NFL.”

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Penguins have signed forward Sam Poulin to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Poulin was the Penguins’ first-round pick at the 2019 NHL Draft.

The Pens say Poulin scored two goals in three games at the Prospects Challenge in Buffalo.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – With days of 80-degree weather, Thanksgiving and Christmas might feel far off. But according to AAA, the next week is going to be the best time to start booking holiday flights.

AAA says 3 years of booking data shows that Sept. 25 until Oct. 27 is the best time to start booking for holiday travel if you’re looking to save some money.

For Thanksgiving, getting your tickets early will cost you an average of $482.

And while it’s a good idea to plan ahead, AAA says travelers who are a bit more last-minute can find good prices one to two weeks before the holiday. Buying tickets during this time frame will cost you an average of $482.

However, booking late will make it more difficult to find seating.

For stress-free flying, AAA recommends flying the Monday of Thanksgiving.

When it comes to Christmas, they say the “sweet spot” is 61 to 90 days before — between Sept. 26 and Oct. 25 — where you can find prices at an average of $561.

It’s once again good news for last-minute travelers — waiting one to two weeks before will give you the average price of $488 per ticket.

As for traveling, AAA says Christmas Eve is the best day to travel, with a consistently low average price per ticket sitting at $527. It’s also a relatively quiet day.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police say multiple people have died, and several others are hospitalized after an incident on Pittsburgh’s South Side.

Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich says three are dead and four are hospitalized.

According to the Public Safety director, five were found in a Southside Works City Apartments and one in an elevator. The seventh victim was found at the corner of 26th Street and East Carson Street.

One man was 33-years-old, and Public Safety says the others were around the same age.

All the victims were wearing orange paper wrist bands, and police said they were aware of two Pittsburgh venues that used orange wrist bands Saturday night. After further investigation, it was determined that an event with orange wrist bands was not related to the deaths and injuries.

They believe this was an isolated drug-overdose event, not a widespread situation.

Police say they want to stress that this isn’t a case of drugs being passed around at a large venue in a way that could have affected other people.

However, they say they are concerned about a “tainted, potentially deadly batch of drugs.”

“But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t some bad drugs going around elsewhere,” said Pittsburgh Police Commander Jason Lando.

“We have nothing to put us in that direction right now.”

Three of the victims were upgraded to stable condition, and one is still in critical condition.

Police said that the victims took drugs at a different place, not a venue that would have had an orange band.

The City Clubs Apartments Manager issued a statement, saying that the individuals involved weren’t residents at the building.

The statement reads:

“The individuals that were involved in the incident were not residents of our community. It is our understanding that they were acquaintances of a resident in good standing. It is also our understanding that the group had attended an outside event before returning to the apartment.

We express our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the affected individuals and send our thoughts and prayers to those who were transported to the hospital.

We are working closely with the local authorities. As this is an ongoing police investigation, all questions should be directed to the Pittsburgh Police Department.”

Police say they aren’t sure what the drug is. But they don’t expect to see overdoses all over the city, even if there’s the possibility of a bad batch going around.

“So we are not in a situation where we expect people to be found in an overdosed state all over the city,” Lando said.

Pennsylvania American Water customers can now drink their water without having to boil it first.

Crews are still out at Becks Run Road, which is closed. East Agnew Avenue will remain closed until further notice.

Assuming Becks Run Road is still closed when your Monday morning commute, here’s the detour: take Carson Street to Glass Run Road, to Churchview Avenue to Brownsville Road and back to Becks Run Road.

After a massive water main break in Carrick, the water had to pass tests two days in a row.

The advisory was lifted Sunday and Pennsylvania American Water said the Pennsylvania DEP authorized lifting the advisory.

A catastrophic water main break in Carrick occurred Friday when a 24-inch main broke, sending thousands of gallons of water gushing down East Agnew Avenue.

The rushing water forced first responders to rescue two people, their cats and caused several homes to be condemned.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A catastrophic water main break in Carrick occurred Friday when a 24-inch main broke, sending thousands of gallons of water gushing down East Agnew Avenue.

The rushing water forced first responders to rescue two people, their cats and caused several homes to be condemned.

“I told my wife, I’ve lived in Pittsburgh all my life, never saw a water break that bad, ever,” said Dave Morton, a Pennsylvania American Water customer.

The break interrupted water service in nearly 40 neighborhoods in the South Hills area and throughout the day, those customers have been making a run on free cases of water at the Brentwood Volunteer Fire Station on Brownsville Road.

“After these are all gone, probably 70,000 bottles of water completely, factoring in the water buffalo as well,” said Brentwood Volunteer Fire Department Lieutenant Steve Mattolla.

The good news is the broken main has been repaired but some customers are still under a boil advisory. Mt. Lebanon restaurant owner Jeff Iovino has been dealing with the advisory.

“All the beverages are coming out of a can or bottle,” he said. “Some beer and wine have been fine, but some of the menu items had to just say, limit them.”

Under the advisory, boiled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and food preparation. Customers can shower, but it is recommended that water should not get in your mouth.

The water company has conducted two tests so far and the results are unknown. The Pennsylvania DEP requires two consecutive days of clean tests before the advisory can be lifted.

Meanwhile, some customers worry about more catastrophic breaks because of the aging condition of so many pipes

“We had a break up the street a couple years ago, my basement got flooded, it was just a mess,” said Morton. “Because they’re just old, they’re outdated.”

There’s a chance the boil advisory could be lifted tomorrow but in the meantime, part of East Agnew Avenue and Becks Run Road remain closed for repairs. There is no word on when they will reopen.

Grisham, who drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth, put the Brewers up 10-1 in the seventh with his sixth homer.

Brent Suter (3-0) relieved to start the fifth and pitched two scoreless innings for the victory. Suter has allowed one earned run in 14 1/3 innings in seven appearances since coming back from Tommy John surgery.

MIAMI (KDKA) — After his release from New England, Antonio Brown’s agent Drew Rosenhaus told Adam Schefter that a few teams are interested, but they want more information on his ongoing legal troubles.

Antonio Brown’s agent Drew Rosenhaus said tonight he already has had communication “with a few teams that are interested” in his client and that “want information regarding his legal situation and the NFL investigation.”

The wide receiver is also facing lawsuits from Asian Tropical Fish Hatchery – Aqua World, an exotic fish store in Pittsburgh that claims he never paid them for aquariums installed in his home.

Despite the interest, Rosenhaus clarified that until the NFL’s investigation into Brown is complete, a contract is unlikely.

He was recently cut by the Patriots, shortly after being released from the Raiders.

The Patriots released a statement saying, “The New England Patriots are releasing Antonio Brown. We appreciate the hard work of many people over the past 11 days, but we feel that it is best to move in a different direction at this time.”

SLIPPERY ROCK TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — A woman was transported to the hospital after a truck collided with her vehicle on Route 422.

The accident occurred just after 5:30 p.m. near Fox Road.

The man inside the truck tried to escape into the woods following the accident, but police located him and he was taken into custody.

The condition of the woman has not been released.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Kendall Austin threw 202 yards, Martell Pettaway ran for a pair of scores, and West Virginia held on for a 29-24 victory over Kansas to open Big 12 play Saturday.

Kennedy McCoy added 73 yards rushing and a touchdown, and Evan Staley bounced back from an early miss to hit three field goals, as the Mountaineers (3-1) improved to 8-1 against the Jayhawks.

The Mountaineers held Kansas (2-2) to 377 yards total offense, one week after new coach Les Miles’ bunch had 567 yards and five TDs in a rare road rout of Boston College. And much of the yardage Saturday came as the Jayhawks drove frantically for a touchdown with 2:10 left in the game.

Their onside kick went out of bounds and West Virginia nearly ran out of the clock. By the time the Jayhawks got the ball back, they had time for a hook-and-ladder from midfield that came up short.

Carter Stanley led the Jayhawks with 235 yards passing and three touchdowns, but he also threw a costly interception when they were trailing 23-17 midway through the fourth quarter.

Pettaway finished the ensuing drive with his second TD run to make it a two-possession game.

West Virginia and Kansas had played to a first-half draw, though the real winner was the wind. It was whipping out of the south at 25 mph, making it tough for both offenses to move the ball.

The Mountaineers scored first – with the wind – on McCoy’s short plunge, then Kansas answered – also with the wind – when Stanley hit Kwamie Lassiter with a 28-yard TD strike.

The momentum shifted late in the first half, though. The Jayhawks had the ball, the wind and three timeouts in the closing minutes but went three-and-out and punted. West Virginia then raced 51 yards in just 49 seconds to set up Staley’s go-ahead field goal.

The Mountaineers kept the momentum to start the second half.

Pettway, getting his first carry of the game, picked through a couple tackles at the line of scrimmage and cruised 23 yards for the score. And when Kansas got a chip-shot field goal and appeared to recover the onside kick, Jamahl Horne was flagged for kick-catch interference.

West Virginia was given the ball back and drove for another field goal for a 20-10 lead.

Stanley gave the Jayhawks a chance when he hit Andrew Parchment on a 75-yard catch-and-run. But after West Virginia got another field goal, the Jayhawks’ quarterback ruined any chance of a comeback when his throw to the sideline was picked off by the Mountaineers’ Keith Washington II.

Pettaway’s second touchdown run made it a two-score game for West Virginia.

THE TAKEAWAY

West Virginia was abysmal on its last road trip, losing 38-7 to Missouri. But the Mountaineers bounced back to spank North Carolina State last weekend and are flying high entering a week off.

Kansas was trying to build on its win in Chestnut Hill, but two turnovers and the penalty on the onside kick cost valuable possessions. Might have cost its best chance to win a Big 12 game, too.

BEAVER (KDKA) — Dozens of demonstrators gathered on the steps of the Beaver County Courthouse calling for Congress to address big issues.

The demonstrators, organized by a women’s advocacy group known as “The New Agenda,” are calling for action on healthcare, immigration, and gun law reform.

They said local and federal government aren’t doing enough and they’re demanding accountability.

“To show we support the march in Washington and we support the American people in demanding we get a Congress, we get a government, that does something for the people,” said Marlin Tavernaris, one of the demonstrators.

The march was part of the “We The People” March that took place across the country today.

ROBINSON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — A big salute to all service members took place today at The Mall At Robinson.

KDKA and The Mall At Robinson teamed up to host “Military Support Day” an even honoring those actively serving as well as veterans and their families.

Discounts were offered to those that are serving and those that have served.

There was also an opportunity to meet cast members from the CBS show “SEAL Team.”

“We’re trying to tell their stories accurately every week,” said Toni Trucks one of the actresses on SEAL Team. “So we want to be able to do a good job and that means engaging with the community in a real way.”

Items were donated for a raffle and there was a silent auction, all benefitting “It’s About The Warrior Foundation.”

“Any chance a community has to put something together like this, I fully and whole-heartedly support it, I mean it’s awesome,” said Judd Lormand, another cast member of SEAL Team.

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Wide receiver Aaron Matthews hit quarterback Kenny Pickett on a 3-yard, fourth-down touchdown pass with 56 seconds remaining and Pittsburgh stunned No. 15 UCF 35-34 on Saturday.

The Panthers (2-2) ended UCF’s 25-game regular-season winning streak on a play head coach Pat Narduzzi called the “Pitt Special” in a nod to the Philadelphia Eagles, who ran a similar play two seasons ago in their Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots.

Pitt trailed by six when Pickett drove the Panthers to the UCF 3. Running back A.J. Davis took a direct snap with Pickett going in motion. Davis handed the ball to Matthews, who rolled to his right and hit Pickett in the end zone. UCF’s last-gasp drive went nowhere.

Pickett completed 25 of 47 for 224 yards with a touchdown despite leaving briefly with a right arm injury. Maurice Ffrench and Dontavius Butler-Jenkins caught touchdown passes for the Panthers, who bounced back from an emotional loss to rival Penn State last week by withstanding a 31-point outburst from the Knights (3-1) in the middle of the game.

UCF quarterback Gabriel Dillon passed for 338 yards and two touchdowns but also threw his first two interceptions of the season. Gabriel Davis hauled in 10 passe for 151 yards and two scores, but the Knight’s high-tempo offense didn’t run as efficiently as it had during three blowouts to start the year.

UCF finished with 423 yards, 180 under its season average.

The Panthers reeled off the game’s first 21 points, including an 18-yard blocked punt return for a touchdown midway through the second quarter. Trailing by three touchdowns for the first time since a blowout loss to Michigan in 2016, UCF responded emphatically, with a little help from the Panthers.

Pitt running back A.J. Davis fumbled deep in Panther territory with 5:41 left in the first half. Adrian Killins scored four plays later and UCF was off and running.

Gabriel found Gabe Davis for two third-quarter touchdowns. Those touchdowns were sandwiched around an 87-yard punt return for a score by Otis Anderson, who broke several tackles while racing down the left sideline to the end zone.

Gabriel’s 28-yard rainbow to Davis gave UCF 31 points in less than a quarter. Pitt backup quarterback Nick Patti’s first career touchdown pass, a 6-yard toss to Butler-Jenkins, drew the Panthers within three late in the third quarter. The Panthers had a chance to tie it early in the fourth, but Alex Kessman’s 40-yard attempt sailed wide.

Gabriel led a long scoring drive – including a conversion on fourth-and-1 at the UCF 47 – that ended with a Dylan Barnas 28-yard field goal with 4:36 to go.

Pitt, which opted to attempt a field goal while down seven in the fourth quarter against Penn State last week, moved steadily down the field. And this time, the Panthers dialed up a play that gave them a victory that should provide their season with a massive jolt.

Expect UCF to take a drop after losing in the regular season for the first time since 2016.

(CNN) — A Louisiana man has drowned after proposing to his girlfriend underwater while the couple was vacationing in Tanzania.

Steven Weber and Kenesha Antoine were staying in Pemba Island, CNN affiliate WBRZ reports, in a wooden cabin with a bedroom submerged beneath the ocean surface off the east coast of Africa.

Weber proposed on Thursday by swimming underwater and holding a handwritten note against the bedroom windows, according to a video Antoine posted Friday on Facebook, before presenting a ring.

The note, which Weber had placed inside a transparent plastic bag, read, “I can’t hold my breath long enough to tell you everything I love about you. BUT…Everything I love about you I love more EVERY DAY!

“Will you please be my WIFE,” the note continued. “Marry me???”

But Weber failed to return to the surface, Antoine said in a subsequent Facebook post. “You never emerged from those depths, so you never got to hear my answer, ‘Yes! Yes! A million times, yes, I will marry you!!’ ” she wrote.

“We never got to embrace and celebrate the beginning of the rest of our lives together, as the best day of our lives turned into the worst, in the cruelest twist of fate imaginable,” Antoine continued.

“I will try to take solace in the fact that we enjoyed the most amazing bucket list experiences these past few days, and that we both were so happy and absolutely giddy with excitement in our final moments together.”

CNN has reached out to Antoine for comment.

The Manta Resort, where the couple was staying, issued a statement on Saturday confirming the death.

“Our sincerest condolences, thoughts and prayers are with his girlfriend, families and friends impacted by this tragic accident,” said Matthew Saus, the resort’s CEO.

Local authorities were investigating, he added.

The State Department confirmed that a US tourist had died in Tanzania but gave no further details.

“We offer our sincerest condolences to the family on their loss. We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance,” the State Department said.

Coming off of a 4-1 victory over the Blue Jackets, the Penguins rested most of their big names for the second half of their back-to-back preseason matchup.

Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and Matt Murray were all scratched for the third game of the preseason.

The game started off well for the Pens when just over two minutes in, Juuso Riikola sent a shot from the point past Columbus goalie Joonas Korpisalo, giving Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead.

As the first period progressed, the Blue Jackets would tilt the ice in the favor, holding the Pens without a shot on goal for about five minutes following their opening tally.

Then the Blue Jackets would tie the game up on the power play when Cam Atkinson was left all alone in front of DeSmith. Pierre-Luc Dubois would send a pass cross-ice to Atkinson who went forehand-backhand to tie the game at one apiece.

Despite outshooting the Blue Jackets 15-12 through two periods, no one would find the back of the net in the middle frame.

Much like the Pens started the game, the Blue Jackets ended in a similar fashion.

A puck would deflect off of Gudbranson’s skate, past DeSmith just over two minutes into the third period, giving Columbus the lead.

The Penguins would get two power-play opportunities in the third period, but could not convert on either.

An empty net from Josh Anderson with 36 seconds remaining in the game would seal the deal, giving Columbus the victory.

Goaltender Casey DeSmith stopped 19 of 21 shots faced for a .905 save percentage and his counterpart Joonas Korpisalo stopped 24 of 25, good for a .960 save percentage.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA)– The Public Utility Commission announced a new policy that will change the electric and natural gas affordability for poverty-stricken Pa. residents.

Our partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reported that the commission recently “approved a new policy directing utilities to make sure low-income customers spend no more than 10% of their income on gas and light bills.”

After two years of research, the staff concluded that customers making below 50% of the federal poverty line see more of their income poured into energy bills than any other income bracket.

This is below $6,245 for one person or $12,875 for a family of four. Since 1992, regulators.

The new policy will make sure utility regulators do not charge low-income customers more than 10% of their income on gas and light bills.

Patrick Cicero, executive director of the Pennsylvania Utility Law Project, told the Post-Gazette that, “We think these are substantial improvements. For households who don’t have any money, this is going to allow them to remain connected to service.”

The Post-Gazette reported that Peoples Natural Gas, already aligns with the policy, according to Rita Black, its director of customer relations, but there are other companies that have mixed reactions about the assistance program.

“We cannot simply open the ratepayers’ checkbook to pay others’ bills,” said Commissioner Norman Kennard, who dissented from the vote.

(CNN) — The great “vapocalypse” has begun and the horsemen leading the charge are from New York and Michigan.

The news that both states have banned the sale of most flavored e-liquids set off alarms in the vaping community, and led to some vaping enthusiasts to stock up on flavors like Dinner Lady Lemon Sherbet, Vapetasia Killer Kustard and Aqua Sweet Cereal Milk.

The motivation for this vape stockpiling is similar to people who load up on weapons following challenges to the Second Amendment, according to a firearms historian CNN spoke with.

Corinne Gaines, 30, of Maryland, decided to stockpile because of her health and President Donald Trump, who has flirted with the idea of banning flavored vaping products. So far, Gaines has dropped $100 on an assortment of fruity flavors like Apple Twist and Amazing Mango. Her collection should last eight months.

“I’ve gotten sinus infections and walking pneumonia from smoking cigarettes. I tried to quit many times using nicotine products such as the patch and gum and was never able to do so until I started vaping. I have never gotten sick from vaping,” Gaines said. “I believe the Trump administration’s ban on flavored e-liquids and cartridges is ridiculous and unnecessary.”

Gaines was one of a dozen people who shared photos of their hauls on Reddit’s vaping forum over the past two weeks. The photos included one from a 29-year-old Georgia man who has stockpiled 400 milliliters so far thanks to a sale he spotted and another from a Nebraska man who spent $75 on 400 milliliters of nicotine-flavored juice that should last four months.

The cloud of uncertainty surrounding the future of vaping in the US has spurred stockpiling among users afraid of returning to cigarettes. This concern was echoed by Gregory Conley, president of the American Vaping Association, a nonprofit advocacy group, who commended nicotine addicts for preparing for the worst.

“It’s a moral imperative to disobey unethical laws and they’re going to fight and not relapse back to smoking,” Conley said. “These are the type of hardcore former smokers who if they can’t access nicotine in a way that they enjoy, they are heavily at risk to going back to smoking.”

The health consequences of vaping remain unclear

While the link between cigarettes and lung cancer has been well documented, information on vaping’s health consequences is nascent. An outbreak of a vaping-related illness in the US has left hundreds sick and some dead.

The CDC says that e-cigarettes should never be used by youth, young adults pregnant women or adults who don’t already use tobacco products. The American Lung Association recently warned that “e-cigarettes are not safe” and can cause irreversible lung damage and disease.

As of September 19, there have been 530 cases of lung injury from vaping reported from 38 states and 1 US territory. Vaping has accounted for seven deaths in six states, according to the CDC. In comparison, cigarette smoking will account for roughly 480,000 deaths this year in the US, the CDC added.

While New York and Michigan hope the ban on certain e-cigarettes will stymie use among children, Mike Helms, a firearms historian, believes these decisions may have unintended consequences. Helms said he suspects that the proposed bans may lead to a rise in a flavored e-liquid black market and accelerate stockpiling. This sort of acceleration has been well documented in the firearms community, Helms said.

The psychology of stockpiling

“Bans often inspire a knee-jerk reaction from the people they affect the most,” Helms said. “I don’t know if the proposed ban on flavored vaping fluid evokes this sort of response. I suspect it does for at least a small number of people. Vaping is not protected in the Bill of Rights, certainly not in the same way that guns are.”

In the 1970s, the movement to ban handguns, and the popularity of the “Dirty Harry” movie franchise, helped boost handgun sales, especially for large-caliber revolvers like the Smith & Wesson used by the “Dirty Harry” characte, Helms said.

In the mid-1980s, the desire to ban Glock pistols was based on the government’s own paranoia that the polymer-based firearms would be “invisible” to X-ray machines at airports, Helms said. This resulted in an unprecedented sales boost for polymer-framed handguns, he said.

The use of an AR-15 during the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012, saw the price of the rifle skyrocket, Helms said.

Democrat Rep. Tom Suozzi and Republican Rep. Pete King, both of New York, have written federal legislation calling for a federal ban on flavored e-cigarettes and a tax on e-cigarette products equivalent to $3 per pack. The bill, titled the Quell Underage Inhaling of Toxic Substances (QUITS) Act, was introduced Thursday.

“Too often our children and adolescents are being exposed to the dangers of nicotine addiction,” King said in a statement. “It is imperative that Congress explore means to end this epidemic and ensure the well-being of our youth. I am proud to work with Rep. Suozzi in this effort.”

PITTSBURGH (KDKA)– Local runners experienced a one-of-a-kind course that placed among aircrafts at the Pittsburgh International Airport.

This year, the FlyBy 5K and 2-Mile Fun Run and Walk presented by CNX Resources held its very first flag folding ceremony sponsored by the Heinz History Center.

“Each year we try to change this event up to make it more special for every participant,” said Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis.

“Participants are able to see what is going on at the airport and, as this event continues to grow, more of the causes we support are able to benefit.”

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Two bottles of a rare whiskey passed down through the Mellon family sold for a pretty nice sum at an auction — $28,000 total.

A bottle of 1909 Overholt Rye was put up for both an in-person and online auction hosted by the Kentucky-based Speed Art Museum.

The museum says that as the bottle was about to go for $14,000, there was a twist.

At the last minute, a man donated a second bottle.

The whiskey, which comes from the Mellon family’s estate, is extremely rare with only 28 bottles left.

The museum says a third of the Overholt distillery was once owned by Henry Clay Frick, the founder’s grandson.

When Frick died in 1919, he passed the shares to Andrew Mellon, who they say became the distillery’s majority owner.

The museum says before Prohibition in 1920, Mellon and his brothers stored the best barrels of rye from the previous 15 years.

The distillery was then passed to Richard Mellon Scaife, the publisher of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. According to the museum, in 2014, 60 cases of the Overholt Rye whiskey were found in a cellar.

A patron of the Speed Art Museum managed to get his hands on six cases and donated one bottle to the museum.

“A 1.5-ounce pour will set you back $1,250, and that’s if you can even get it,” bourbon expert Fred Minnick said in a press release.

“It has such a historic taste. They just don’t make whiskey like that anymore.”

The museum says the Overholt Rye is the “unicorn of whiskeys,” which explains why two bottles went for nearly $30,000.

EAST DEER TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) – Six people were arrested after a Pennsylvania State Police DUI checkpoint.

According to Pennsylvania State Police Kittanning, 389 vehicles were checked at a point on Route 28, near Crawford Run Road.

Six people were arrested for DUIs.

State Police say all the arrested drivers were drug-impaired.

They also say one arrest was for an outstanding arrest warrant.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) – Police say they have caught a West Virginia inmate who escaped a prisoner transport van and tried to flee in a stolen ambulance.

According to Morgantown Police, 45-year-old Craig Allen Martisko of Granville faces numerous charges in the incident on Friday.

Police say he is a North Central Regional Jail inmate who was being transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital for treatment alongside three other inmates who were dropped off for court hearings.

Police say Martisko escaped the van when it came to pick him back up and he stole a Fayette County ambulance, which he crashed into another ambulance, several cars, and other objects before hitting a utility pole.

HARRISBURG (KDKA) – Over 30 bipartisan Pennsylvania state House members wrote a letter to Gov. Tom Wolf, urging him to act on methane gas emissions.

According to a press release from State Rep. Greg Vitali, more than 30 Pennsylvania House members want Wolf to act on regulations that were part of the methane reduction strategy the governor released back in January 2016.

Vitali, who coordinated the letter, says 11,000 unconventional wells drilled in Pennsylvania since 2004 would be affected by these emission regulations.

The letter cites Pennsylvania’s role as the second-largest natural gas-producing state, and says the emissions “have a significant impact on public health and global climate.”

A recent proposal from the EPA would no longer require the oil and gas industry to install technology that could monitor possible leaks.

The letter also says given these rollbacks, they’d like Wolf to act now.

Additionally, the letter asks Wolf’s administration to bring the regulations before the Environmental Quality Board before Nov. 19.

HARRISBURG (KDKA)– The Pennsylvania Departments of Agriculture and Health are advising residents to take extra precautionary measures to avoid mosquito bites.

Officials say Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) is a rare mosquito-transmitted viral infection and it has been confirmed in Carbon, Monroe, and Erie Counties.

EEE can be potentially fatal to birds, horses, and humans.

The CDC says there have been 18 reported cases across the country in 2019. Most fatal cases have been reported in the Mid-Atlantic states.

Symptoms for the disease include a high fever of 103 degrees or higher, a stiff neck, headache, and lack of energy. Most symptoms typically last 3-10 days.

Symptoms for horses include fever, circling, drooping ears, hyperactivity, paralysis, abdominal gait, and aimless wandering. Horse owners are advised to vaccinate their horses.

Residents are advised to use insect repellents and cover exposed skin when outdoors. They should also make sure windows and screen doors are sealed to prevent mosquitos from entering their homes.

Because of its high mortality rate in humans and horses, this mosquito-transmitted disease is regarded as one of the most serious in the United States.

Here are some simple steps to eliminate standing water that could attract mosquitos:

• Remove tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots, discarded tires or any object that could collect standing water. Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers left outdoors.
• Clean roof gutters annually, particularly if leaves from nearby trees tend to clog the drains.
• Turn over plastic wading pools and wheelbarrows when not in use.
• Do not let water stagnate in birdbaths.
• Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish.
• Clean and chlorinate swimming pools and remove standing water from pool covers.
• Use landscaping to eliminate standing water that collects on your property.
• Treat standing water that cannot be eliminated with Bti products, which are sold at outdoor supply, home improvement, and other stores. Bti is a natural product that kills mosquito larvae but is safe for people, pets, aquatic life, and plants.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA)– Two local hospitals are taking customer service to the next level as professional greeters have become just as important as doctors and nurses.

28-year-old Ja’Ray Gamble told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that being a greeter in UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital is more than just a job.

“I greet people when they come into the hospital. I try to give them my full attention, so despite what they are there for, there is someone to make that stay a little more welcoming,” said Gamble.

Gamble’s day consists of greeting patients and their families when they first arrive at the hospital in hopes of turning a stressful situation into a positive experience.

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that Chris Vistas, director of hospitality and operations, said Gamble’s hard work is an “integral part of the overall patient experience at the hospital, and it is a service that is being placed on a higher priority within the health care industry.”

This concentration on customer service has also benefitted the Allegheny Health Network facilities.

Jen Centro, vice president of patient experience at AHN, told Triblive that putting in extra care allows the administration to observe the everyday experience from both the patient’s and employee’s perspectives.

STATE COLLEGE (KDKA)– Believe it or not, there’s a list of the drunkest cities in the United State and State College topped the list for the state of Pennsylvania.

24/7 Wall St. reviewed the percentage of men and women over the age of 18 who reported that they engage in heavy or binge drinking.

The CDC defines heavy drinking as 15 or more drinks a week for men and 8 or more a week for women.

Binge drinking is 5 or more drinks on an occasion for men and 4 or more for women.

The study showed that 23% of adults in the area admitted to heavy and binge drinking. For the entire state of Pa., 20.5% of adults admitted to heavy and binge drinking.

Pa. is ranked 10th highest in the country for binge drinking.

State College has 22.7% alcohol-related vehicular deaths. Throughout the rest of the state, 28.3% of adults are in alcohol-related driving deaths.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Almost 12,000 pounds of frozen chicken pub-style entrees labeled as beef pub-style entrees are being recalled due to misbranding and undeclared allergens, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced.

The product contains soy, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label.

The frozen pub-style entrees were produced on June 18, 2019.

The 20-oz. retail cartons containing two portions of “Marie Callender’s PUB STYLE STEAK & ALE” bear establishment number “EST. 46299” on the product packaging.

The problem was discovered when Conagra Brands received consumer complaints reporting that the product was incorrectly labeled.

The recall is affecting several states, including Pennsylvania.

There are no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers. Consumers should check both the exterior label and unboxed product to determine if they have the product. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
