Raytheon is making a $10 million, five-year pledge to fund education initiatives for military members and their families – the company's latest effort to help veterans and their families succeed in civilian lives.

The funds will support science, technology, engineering and math education in partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Student Veterans of America.

"Raytheon works to ensure our military personnel can accomplish their mission, return safely and prosper at homecoming," said Raytheon Chairman and CEO Thomas A. Kennedy, a former U.S. Air Force captain. "This pledge demonstrates our commitment to supporting success in civilian life that armed service members and their families so richly deserve."

Raytheon's tradition of armed-services support includes:

  • Employment: Raytheon employs more than 10,000 veterans. Last year, the Raytheon Employee Veterans Network, or RAYVETS, evolved from a system of small chapters to an official company organization. RAYVETS supports veterans who work for the company as well as veterans' organizations in local communities.
  • Education: Raytheon's scholarships, leadership mentoring and job training help veterans succeed through the study of science, technology, engineering and math. Last year, the company and Student Veterans of America awarded $40,000 in scholarships for student veterans pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees. Also, the company teamed with Wounded Warrior Project on the Transition Training Academy, which graduated nearly 4,000 injured service members and their caregivers. The academy provides information technology training to help student compete in the job market.
  • Volunteerism: Raytheon employees spent nearly 7,000 hours volunteering in support of military families in 2014. Their efforts include mentoring and training in classrooms, afterschool programs and professional workshops.
  • Philanthropy: Raytheon supports numerous organizations and recognitions of military veterans including the Congressional Medal of Honor, Air Force Aid Society, Army Emergency Relief Fund, Coast Guard Foundation, U.S. Navy Memorial Foundation, Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, the United Service Organizations, the Military Child Education Coalition, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation and the National World War II Museum. Raytheon employees have raised nearly $1 million for the Fund in Support of our Troops, an employee-driven initiative to help meet the needs of American troops in all military branches and their families.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America partners with every branch of the U.S. military and serves nearly half a million school-age military youth. The organization has affiliated youth centers on nearly every U.S. military installation and is a steady presence in those children's lives.

Student Veterans of America aims to help veterans earn college degrees that are of high value in the job market. The organization has more than 1,100 chapters across the United States and four other countries.
