The Pittsburgh community recognizes the many ways that Pittsburghers of all ages can honor and celebrate the life and leadership of one of history's most influential figures with a variety of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebrations. Whether young or old, there is a hands-on way to participate and experience the values that Martin Luther King, Jr. represented. From inspiring speeches and congregation meetings to artistic activities that invite you to examine the way you contribute to furthering MLK's teachings, this Martin Luther King, Jr. Day has something for everyone. Celebrate at these five events considered the best in Pittsburgh.

On January 23, join other Pittsburghers at the Coro Center for CIVIC Leadership for the eighth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Awards. Celebrate all that Martin Luther King, Jr. stood for at this special event honoring his values, leadership and service. Nominated individuals and organizations will also be honored based on their contributions to the community and helping to further a more inclusive social equality. General admission tickets to the event are $50 and available to purchase through January 23.

Come together with members of the East End Cooperative Ministry Council of Congregations and the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary for its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, scheduled for January 18 from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Now in its 31st year, this event will commemorate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. through special keynote speakers, including Cecile M. Springer, President of Springer Associates. Be inspired by the devotion to community, social justice, leadership and economic ethics of Ms. Springer who embodies much of what Martin Luther King, Jr. represented. Admission is free; however, canned good donations are requested to benefit the East End Cooperative Ministry's food pantry.

For a family-friendly MLK celebration, head to the Pittsburgh Glass Center on Monday, January 19. With most children in the region off of school, today is the perfect day to have some fun while remembering Martin Luther King, Jr. Stop by the center's Kiln Shop for a glassblowing demonstration and hands-on activities that are geared toward beginner-level crafters. The cost for this workshop is $25. Register online at the Pittsburgh Glass Center's website.

Combine worship, exploration and a weekend of activities and games and you get the Martin Luther King Teen Weekend, a youth group event to be held at the Deer Valley YMCA Family Camp the weekend of January 16-18. A beautiful nature setting sets the scene for winter adventure where you'll spend the days lodging in the camp's numerous modern cabins. Registration, which includes meals, lodging and activities, is available through the Deer Valley Family Camp's website for $100 for students and $115 for adults.

Younger children in particular will enjoy the activities offered at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day during its special event called "The Future: MLK Jr. Day." Designed for children ages 5-7, this one-day event encourages the youngest members of the community to uncover what they can do to honor and continue the values and goals Martin Luther King, Jr. strived for. From there, children will have the opportunity to build their very own models, maps and drawing of their future city. Price to participate is $70 for members and $95 for non-members. "The Future: MLK Jr. Day" is scheduled for Januray 19 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
