Free and Affordable Pittsburgh for 6/29: Free 4th Fun and More!

With the 4th of July falling on Wednesday this year, it creates a super-long celebration, starting this weekend! On this week's Free & Affordable Pittsburgh segment on Pittsburgh Today Live, we're talking about lots of holiday celebrations and traditions, as well as the Three Rivers Regatta, great free live music, and loads of summer fun. Learn a bit more about each of the things mentioned on this week's show.

Start your 4th of July celebrating a little early this year... in June! This Saturday, the Lawrenceville Fireworks Committee is presenting the 68th Annual 4th of July Celebration in Arsenal Park. This celebration goes ALL DAY long and boasts back to back activities and fun. The DJ starts playing at 11 a.m. (and the food booths open then too!), followed by a softball game, children's races, a petting zoo, a baseball game, train rides, pony rides, a fire truck and ambulance display, a wrestling match, an exotic animal show... seriously, this list goes on and on! Of course, what 4th of July celebration would be complete without fireworks? They start at 9:30. This one's a Lawrenceville tradition!

How often can you say you went to Heinz Field... for FREE! Enjoy free concerts all afternoon and evening, highlighted by country superstar Phil Vassar. There will also be performances by The Stickers, an internationally recognized country group from western PA, as well as Pittsburgh-Based Irish rock n roll group Bastard Bearded Irishmen. You can also enjoy regatta water events, get a chance to meet Steely McBeam, family fun, food and games. To top it all off, the ramps of Heinz Field will be open to view the spectacular City of Pittsburgh fireworks, which will begin shortly after Phil Vassar's performance.

Head to Shadyside this saturday to enjoy a fantastic block party for a great cause. This is the first of three outdoor concerts held this summer benefitting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Each event attracts approximately 5000 people! This weekend's concert features Meeting of Important People and Bill Deasy. It's free to attend and enjoy the music, but a $2 wrist band allows you to buy beer and drink on the street. Happy Hour is from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., so you can expect discounted drinks. All proceeds support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation you can donate here as well.

In Travel & Outdoors, you'll find our Three Rivers Regatta Preview, which highlights all the great activities happening during the celebration, which starts this Saturday and runs all the way until the fireworks on Wednesday night. You can catch the Powerboat Superleague Championships, a nature-defying sand structure displayed at Point State Park, watch the comical "Anything that Floats Race", and of course the not-to-miss Flashes of Freedom Fireworks Fantasia. They'll have loads of kids activities too! Best of all, it's free to attend and enjoy!
