Neighbors Remember Charleroi Woman Killed By Bus

CHARLEROI (KDKA) – An elderly woman has died after being hit by a bus.

Charleroi police say 90-year-old Helen Pansino was hit by a Mon Valley Transit Bus near her Crest Avenue home around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

According to investigators, Pansino was crossing the street to board the bus when it pulled out and struck her at the intersection of 9th Street and Crest Avenue.

She was taken to the emergency room at Monongahela Valley Hospital where she died.

The Washington County Coroner has ruled her death accidental.

The bus driver works for First Transit and officials from that company were taking measurements in the street as the investigation continues.

Jim Yelanich, a neighbor, called the victim a "wonderful lady."

"She was always walking down the street, always waiting to catch the bus and always yelling over, 'Hi neighbor!'" he recalled. "And she would always sit on the porch next door."

Pansino would take the bus daily to Riverside Place, a senior center in downtown Charleroi where she would have lunch every day and either play cards or bingo.

"She was just a beautiful person," Mary Mariani, director of Riverside Place, said. "She didn't talk a whole lot, but she intermingled with her peers here. She felt a sense of camaraderie with the people that came here and she just enjoyed coming here every single day."
