Arrest Warrant Issued For Mother In N. Versailles Fire

NORTH VERSAILLES (KDKA) - An arrest warrant has been issued for the mother of two young boys killed in a North Versailles apartment fire earlier this month.

Police are now looking for 27-year-old Kiaira Pollard. She is expected to be charged with homicide, endangering the welfare of children and tampering with a smoke detector.

Investigators said she left her sons, 7-year-old KiDonn Pollard-Ford and 4-year-old Krisdon Pollard-Williams, home alone when the fire broke out.

"It broke my heart. It really did because I was downstairs and I thought they had taken the one boy to the hospital and the other one out. I just happened to look over and I saw them bring out the body bag and that just broke my heart. I just cried," Ruthann Devault said.

Devault called 911 and pounded on the door to the apartment, but it was locked with a deadbolt.

Firefighters found Krisdon hiding under a bed. He later died due to smoke inhalation.

His brother was hiding under a pile of clothes, but was already dead when firefighters arrived.

According to the criminal complaint, the mother said a babysitter was watching the kids. However, investigators do not believe a babysitter was ever there.

"I mean, she's a good lady okay? From what I've known of her she's a good person. I can't see her just leaving her children. But, if she did, she did," neighbor Clifford Fisher said.

The affidavit says she disabled the smoke detector because it went off while she cooked.

Last year, an anonymous caller to Office of Children, Youth and Family Services told representatives that Pollard often left her children alone on Wednesdays while she worked.
