Report: Pirates Sign 5th Round Pick

Pittsburgh (KDKA)- The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed another one of their top picks from the 2011 MLB Draft.

Jim Callis of Baseball America is reporting that the team has signed fifth round pick Tyler Glasnow.

According to the report, Glasnow received a $600,000 over-slot deal, which currently is the highest bonus given out by the Pirates this year, as well as the biggest known deal outside of the top 65 picks in the 2011 draft.

Glasnow (6-7, 200) was scheduled to attend the University of Portland.

Piratesprospects.com says that Glasnow grew rapidly in high school, eight inches after his freshman year. His velocity also increased rapidly, eventually to the upper 80s to low 90s, reaching as high as 93.

The team has now signed 7 of their top 10 draft picks. Of the top picks, RHP Gerrit Cole (1st round), OF Josh Bell (2nd round) and RHP Clay Holmes (9th round) remain unsigned.
