Fire Destroys Hempfield Township Home

HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — Firefighters suspect lightning started a house fire in Westmoreland County.

It happened at a home in the 100-block of Brush Creek Road in the Adamsburg area of Hempfield Township.

Firefighters believe the fire started in the garage and spread to the home which is a total loss.

The house belongs to Westmoreland County Deputy Coroner Tim O'Donnell. He shared the home with his wife, two kids and their dog.

Everyone got out safely.

O'Donnell says he and his family built the house 31 years ago. He was at work when he got a phone call from his wife.

They heard the lightning strike in the background. His wife called him back and told him about the fire.

By the time firefighters arrived, the house was engulfed by flames.

O'Donnell says he and his family are devastated, but they will be okay. He also praised the efforts of the firefighters.
