Hampton Township Couple Fights Off Intruder

HAMPTON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- George Maier, 74, and his wife, Anita, were at their home in Hampton Township last night when a man barged in through the front screen door and threatened to kill Maier.

Police identified the man as 35-year-old Frank McCorkle, of West Deer.

Maier, who was a wrestler from his days in high school and at Penn State, was able to put McCorkle in a head lock on the living room couch and hold him down until police arrived and tased him.

Anita Maier did her part, too, hitting McCorkle in the head with a bronze statue and poking her finger in his eye.

McCorkle is in the Allegheny County Jail facing eight separate charges, including burglary, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.

"I was trying to save my life, so I was really not playing around," Maier told KDKA-TV.

His biggest disappointment?

"I was really disappointed as I didn't get to see the Steeler game – especially the way it ended," he said.

Maier said neither he nor his wife had ever seen McCorkle before.

Hampton police said there was a strong odor of alcohol on McCorkle's breath when they showed up at Maier's house to answer a 9-1-1 call about a burglary in progress.
