Off-Duty State Trooper Facing Charges In Fatal Erie Crash

CANONSBURG (KDKA) -- State police say one of their own has been charged with homicide by vehicle while driving drunk.

According to investigators Trooper Jeffrey Dalessandro was off duty and driving his personal vehicle Wednesday on Route 6 in Erie County when he crossed the center hitting another vehicle head on around 10:15 p.m.

Daryl Nunemaker, 21, of Edinboro was pronounced dead at the scene. Dalessandro, from Canonsburg, has been a trooper for nine years. He works out of the Pittsburgh barracks in Moon Township.

Dalessandro faces many charges including homicide by vehicle and driving under the influence. Police say he was impaired by alcohol.

The trooper was arrested, arraigned and released after posting a $25,000 bond.

He is suspended from work without pay.
