Mild Winter Leads To Early Road Construction Season

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- With the good comes the bad and so it goes with weather and construction.

We've enjoyed a milder than normal winter so we get to pay for it with earlier than normal road construction.

Perhaps you've noticed the construction signs going up on the Parkway North and the Parkway East.

The Parkway North construction channelers are there to get you into a single lane going onto the Veterans Bridge. A summer's worth of work is planned on the bridge and it will mean a single lane closed at a time throughout the construction season.

Look for that work to get started in the next couple weeks.

On the Parkway East the work to renovate and raise the roof of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel will begin soon.

The initial work will be done during the overnight hours, wrapping up by 5 a.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends.

Eventually, the work will require total weekend closures. On several weekends one tunnel at a time. Those overnight closings will begin before the end of the month.

More immediately, Interstate 79 will be closed for 15 minutes at a time between Bridgeville and Southpointe Saturday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. A crew will be installing cables overhead across the interstate.

Also this weekend, crews will be overhead sign work on the Parkway West in the area of Pittsburgh International Airport. That work will be between the airport and McClaren Road on Sunday morning between 6 a.m. and noon. The work will require single lane closures.
