Beechview Man Takes Own Life After Shooting Mother

BEECHVIEW (KDKA) – Police are investigating after a man allegedly took his own life after shooting his mother multiple times in Beechview early Tuesday morning.

According to police, the shooting happened in the 2000-block of Broadway Avenue around 12:35 a.m.

"It's a tragic situation here. It shouldn't have happened, but it happened." Herbert Matthie, a neighbor, said. "We woke up because of the noise from the explosion, from the gun maybe."

Emergency dispatchers received a call and heard gunshots in the background. When police arrived, they found a man dead on the porch from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"911 received a call from a male inside a home in the 2000-block of Broadway that he had just shot his mother and he was awaiting for police to arrive and kill him," Pittsburgh Police Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki said.

However, before police arrived at the scene, the suspect turned the gun on himself.

"When officers arrived they found 55-year-old Henry Sunder with a gunshot wound to his head and he was pronounced deceased," Cmdr. Stangrecki said.

Inside the home, 73-year-old Elizabeth Sunder was clinging to life.

"His mother was inside the residence. She was rushed to Mercy Hospital,  where she underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the eye, I believe two gunshot wounds to the shoulders and two gunshot wounds to the trunk," Cmdr. Stangrecki said.

Police are still investigating why Sunder tried to kill his mother and then took his own life, but KDKA has learned he worked for the Mt. Lebanon School District and was fired in May.

Despite being shot five times, police said us Elizabeth Sunder is expected to survive
