MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (KDKA) — Police in Morgantown, W. Va., are looking for two, possibly three suspects after break-ins at the home of an elderly widow. Surveillance video captured the burglars going through the woman’s home.

The masked suspects who rummaged through the Morgantown home had every reason to hide their faces. They did the unthinkable whether they realized it or not.

Authorities say they stole the ashes of the woman’s late husband.

“I can’t imagine somebody taking something like that,” said one local resident. “I mean it had to have been maybe kids, or I don’t know. I’ve never heard of such a thing.”

Police think the same burglars have broken into the same woman’s house at least four times.

The burglaries took place in a neighborhood known as South Park, a residential area with tree-lined streets and neatly manicured lawns and hedges overlooking Downtown Morgantown.

The woman who was targeted is a widow in her 70s. She has not been identified for her own safety.

People in the neighborhood reacted to the news of the break-ins and stolen ashes with disgust and disbelief.

“That doesn’t make any sense,” said Aaron Rote, a Morgantown resident. “I mean it must have been someone who knew the lady or had a bone to pick with her.”

“My heart goes out to the homeowners,” added Tracey Lea Frisch, also of Morgantown. “I mean, to have something like that taken away, I would be devastated. I hope when they catch the people, they throw the book at them.”

A security camera was rolling as the thieves made off with the box containing the ashes. Investigators say the suspects took the box and left the briefcase it was in behind.

The taping system was installed after previous burglaries at the same house when cash and other valuables were taken.

Police continue to try to identify and find the suspects.
