Mother Charged In Near Drowning Of Toddler

GREEN TREE (KDKA) – A woman has been charged with attempted homicide after a toddler nearly drowned in the bath tub of a Green Tree hotel Monday.

According to police, officers and paramedics were called to the Best Western hotel on Greentree Road around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

"It's our belief that the mother tried to drown the child in a bathtub in the room," Allegheny County Police Supt. Charles Moffatt said.

When they arrived, they found a 2-year-old boy unconscious and without a pulse. Paramedics were able to restore a pulse and rushed him to Children's Hospital, where he was last listed in grave condition.

During the course of their investigation, the boy's mother allegedly gave different accounts of what had transpired.

Flanagan said she left the child alone in tub while she bandaged her sore back, then she said she was with the boy, but could not hold his head above the water.

The family is from West Virginia and the child's father was home at the time of the incident. Allegheny County Police Supt. Charles Moffatt told KDKA-TV the boy's father has come to Pittsburgh from Inwood, W.Va., to be with his son at the hospital.

The mother has been identified as 33-year-old Sharon Flanagan. She is facing a list of charges including, attempted homicide, aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

She is currently being lodged at the Allegheny County Jail on $250,000 bond. Moffatt says he assumes the mother will undergo a mental health evaluation at the jail.
