West Newton Luring Attempt Under Investigation

WEST NEWTON (KDKA) --- The 6-year-old's mother was just finishing up a grocery shopping trip at the Giant Eagle in West Newton, when a man in a van tried to lure her daughter with mineral rocks.

"I'm terrified," Jessica Zuraw says.

Jessica Zurow lives next door to the 6-year-old girl who was reportedly approached by a man around 7 p.m. Monday night.

"The mother put the buggy back, told the girl to get inside the car seat and literally seconds between that happening, the guy came up to her," Zuraw says.

West Newton Police Chief Gary Indof says he's currently working with the owner of Giant Eagle and reviewing surveillance video to find a 50-year-old white man who drives a white van.

"I'll know more tomorrow when I watch some video footage of it, but it's under investigation at this time," says Chief Indof.

Neighbors who live near the Giant Eagle were up in arms and worried their kids could be next.

We have homes here that are like old broken down shacks and I feel that they can be used to conceal people that are out to harm children. I do have a 9-year-old and I'm worried about her going out of our back yard. I don't want her going around where anybody can possibly be," says neighbor Ida Armenson.

While the 6-year-old girl was not hurt, West Newton Police say the case is in the early stages of investigation.
