Panther Hollow: Woodland Hills Product Confident In Pitt's Defense

PITTSBURGH (93-7 THE FAN) -- Redshirt freshman defensive back Lafayette Pitts is one of a number of young Panthers ready to contribute to a defense that already boasted strong leadership.

Pitts, who hasn't stepped onto Heinz Field soil in full uniform since his Woodland Hills Wolverines fell to the North Allegheny Tigers in the WPIAL Class AAAA Final, will do so when Pitt takes on Youngstown State in the 2012 season opener Saturday night.

After practice on the South Side he told us he believes the group that will try to contain the Penguins' offense is a healthy mix of old and new.

"I believe this unit can be very good, as long as we stay disciplined with our keys, and do the right assignments," Pitts said. "I've been waiting to get this opportunity, so I'm very anxious."

Pitts also talks about what to expect from Youngstown State, and about competing for playing time with a crowded secondary that includes fellow WPIAL product and redshirt sophomore Cullen Christian, who sits behind Pitts on the projected depth chart at cornerback, according to PantherLair.com's Chris Peak:
