Roethlisberger Out Indefinitely With Rare Rib Injury

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Ben Roethlisberger's injury situation became much more serious Wednesday afternoon.

Before practice, Roethlisberger spoke with the media and revealed that he is dealing with a rare rib injury that could potentially be fatal if he were to be hit the wrong way.

According to his doctor, the last known case of this type of injury occurred in 1998 with a rugby player.

The rib is partially dislocated and if he were to be hit the wrong way, it could press against his aorta and kill him.

There is no timetable for his return to the lineup at this time.

On Tuesday, it was revealed that Roethlisberger had suffered a sprained sternoclavicular joint in his right shoulder after being sacked in the third quarter of Monday's 16-13 overtime win over the Chiefs.

On Wednesday, the team announced that backup quarterback Byron Leftwich will start against the Baltimore Ravens Sunday night.
