Former Tax Collector Charged With Stealing $115,000

WEST BROWNSVILLE (AP) - The former tax collector of West Brownsville borough has been arrested on a charge she stole $115,000 from the municipality over several years.

The attorney for 58-year-old Cindy Lacey, of West Brownsville, did not immediately return a call.

Her arrest was announced Wednesday by Washington County District Attorney Eugene Vittone.

The DA began investigating about six months ago because borough officials noticed declining tax revenues over the last several years.

The single charge Lacey faces of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds indicates the thefts stretch back to at least 2005. Other details on the thefts were not immediately available.

A district judge jailed Lacey after she couldn't post $115,000 bond. Prosecutors say she surrendered Wednesday morning after making statements implicating herself.
