PSO Honors Marvin Hamlisch With "One Singular Sensation"

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The music world lost a legend last year when Marvin Hamlisch died.

For nearly two decades, he conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops and now the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will hold a tribute called "One Singular Sensation."

"He walked into a room and the room just got happier and I think that's something we can all take away from Marvin," Broadway performer Lucie Arnaz said.

Arnaz is one of dozens of performers to headline the PSO's tribute to Hamlisch Tuesday night at Heinz Hall.

"It means everything to Marvin, Pittsburgh, everything," Hamlisch's widow Terre said.

Hamlisch died last year, but left a world of music behind.

"He was just an amazing genius," Arnaz said. "I don't know too many people who I can use that word about, who could just effortlessly come up with phenomenal ideas for songs, for shows, for lyrics and incredibly generous."

Hamlisch made Pittsburgh his second home as principal conductor at the PSO's Pops Series and the city gave the famous New Yorker something he missed.

"Pittsburgh I think represents his humility because the people asked him, "Why do you like Pittsburgh?" Terre Hamlisch said. "And he said, 'becuase the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is one of the finest in the world,' that's on reason. A second reason is because he loved the people of Pittsburgh."

After numerous tributes to his brilliance across the country, Pittsburgh takes its turn Tuesday.

"One Singular Sensation" opens at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Heinz Hall.
