Woman Seriously Injured In Stairwell Collapse On North Side

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A woman is recovering after the staircase she was on collapsed, trapping her leg between the steps.

The incident happened late Thursday afternoon at Allegheny Commons East on Pittsburgh's North Side.

Pittsburgh paramedics used two different saws to try to cut the metal steps, sending sparks flying into the air.

Neighbors say they witnessed the collapse as the woman left her second-story apartment and began walking down them. They say they ran over to try to lift the staircase to relieve pressure on her leg.

Paramedics used jacks to lift the staircase, and once they sawed through one of the steps, they were able to gently pull her out.

She was said to be in serious condition when she was taken to Allegheny General Hospital.

Neighbors say they've complained about the condition of the staircases before.

No one at the management office was available Thursday night to discuss the steps.
