Customers React To End Of Foodperks

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The recent news that Giant Eagle would no longer provide discounts via foodperks did not sit well with many.

The program provided discounts on groceries for customers who filled up their gas tanks at the Giant Eagle-owned GetGo gas stations, but will end Feb. 13.

"I'm disappointed," Laura Bianco of Imperial said. "I wasn't aware that was going to happen, and we use the GetGo gas very frequently and certainly enjoy using the foodperks."

With foodperks and a Giant Eagle Advantage Card, GetGo customers got 1 percent off their grocery bill for every ten gallons they pumped into their car. But with that incentive gone, some customers said their shopping habits might change too.

"At the moment, I go out of my way to go to GetGo to get the gas," Eleanor Hall of Carnegie said, "and there would really be no incentive to do that, so I won't be doing that anymore."

But not all hope is lost for GetGo customers.

Giant Eagle is taking a page out of Sheetz's loyalty program, which gives a 3-cent per gallon discount on all gas purchases with their "My Sheetz" card.

"If you register the card on-line, then it'll save you 3 cents a gallon, every time you pump, no matter what you buy," Robinson Sheetz Manager Sara Sens said.

And GetGo will match that, with no change to its fuelperks program – which offers a 10-cent per gallon discount for every $50 spent at Giant Eagle.

"That's more important to my family, getting money off on the gasoline," Joe Simunovic of Greentree said. "I think today we were told we have $3.20 off on the gas so that's a good way. I hope that never ends or changes."

The 3-cent per gallon discount for Giant Eagle Advantage Card holders starts this Thursday.

All foodperks discounts obtained by the end date of Feb. 13 can be claimed until May 31.
