Memorial Day used to be called “Decoration Day.”
It was started to honor those who died fighting the Civil War.
It was later expanded to include all of America’s fallen soldiers.
But war has changed.
It has become local – and personal.
Just think about 9-11 –
The passengers and crew on United Flight 93 died in a Pennsylvania field –
Thwarting a terrorist attack on Washington, D.C.
They – too – died serving our country –
Protecting us –
Just like our men and women in the military who died in the line of duty.
They deserve to be honored and remembered –
And maybe THAT should be what Memorial Day is all about.
