2 Injured In McKees Rocks Bridge Accident

MCKEES ROCKS (KDKA) – A mother and her young son were injured in a horrific accident that shut down the McKees Rocks Bridge for hours Monday morning.

An SUV was partially trapped under a dump truck and was pinned against the concrete barrier. A witness, who did not want to be identified, said she saw the driver of the SUV lose control while speeding.

"She was approaching traffic. It looked like she wasn't paying attention, hit the brakes and she swerved into the left lane and went out of control," the witness said.

The SUV was heading north when it spun around and ended up in the southbound lanes.

"It looked like she spun around into a 90 degree turn. Other cars were trying to avoid her and she smacked right into the side of the dump truck," the witness said

The driver was trapped under the crush of metal in the front, her young son was pinned in the back. Neither was wearing a seatbelt and firefighters had to use cutters and the Jaws of Life to free them from the wreckage.

"We had to cut the roof off and roll the dash to get the driver out and we had to use spreaders to get the child out of the back seat," Stowe Township Fire Department Deputy Chief Ken Patton said.

Traffic was detoured and the bridge was temporarily closed to rush hour traffic while crews rescued the mother and son

"I kind of held him from the time of the crash until they came and cut him out," the witness said.

It was a scene the witness will never forget.

"There were a lot of people praying on the side because the baby kept saying his legs and his feet hurt," the witness said.

Stowe Township Police will talk to the driver to find out why she was going so fast.

In the meantime, investigators from the city will do an accident reconstruction to figure out how and why this happened.
