Man Dies After Being Hit By Car In Fawn Twp.

FAWN TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- A man died after being struck by a vehicle this morning in Fawn Township.

A white tennis shoe lies in the middle of Howes Run Road as a grim reminder of what happened to 62-year-old John Walters.

Fawn Township Police say it was right before 10 a.m. when Walters was walking along the right-hand side of the road before stepping out in the middle of the street.

It was in that split second that a driver came through at that same moment, hitting Walters.

"I recognize him because we walk, and said hello as we pass each other," Fred Bernard said. "I'm working in my garden and he says, 'Hello. How you doing? How's things growing?' Things like that."

"I know so many people who walk on this road, and my heart just sank when I heard that something like this happened," Janice Stewart said.

Stewart lives across from the driver who was behind the wheel of the car that police say hit Walters.

He was on his way to work and hadn't driven more than a half mile away before the fatal accident. Police say the driver, who is under 18, called 911 and tried to help Walters.

"The driver who hit the individual started doing CPR on him, and I assisted, and he was DOA," Fawn Township Chief Tim Mayberry said.
