Medical Frontiers: Spine Injury

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) – Dr. Gerald Pifer was joined by Dr. David Jho to discuss spine injury.

The doctor's pointed out several factors that contribute to spinal injuries.

"Spine injuries are common among athletes and active people. Over-training is one of the easiest ways to cause pressure on the spine, that is why it is important to rest in between workouts," said Dr. Jho.

Although Massage therapy and chiropractic care are helpful in eliminating minor spinal pain, people who experience severe spinal discomfort should see a doctor for a more extensive treatment option.

Spine surgery is usually successfully, but there are cases where patients experience painful symptoms post surgery.

"Some symptoms can be shooting pain down to the arms and fingers, or coordination problems with hands or walking they," said Dr. Jho.

If patients experience those kinds of symptoms post surgery, they should see their doctor immediately.

Dr. Pifer and Dr. Yho also discussed ways to keep the spine healthy and injury free.
