Bear Sighting Shocks Belle Vernon Residents

BELLE VERNON (KDKA) -- People living in a Belle Vernon neighborhood can't "bear" the thought of having a bear in their community.

The 400-pound animal was spotted around 7:30 a.m. near Perry Avenue and Summer Street.

"I see this big brown thing or black thing crossing in front of me, and I was thinking that can't be a bear," said Greg Zborovancik, Belle Vernon Middle School's principal, of his drive into work. "When I stopped, the bear turned and looked right at me."

People living there say the animal grabbed a snack in their garden.

"We had blossoms on our pumpkins and everything last night, and now the blossoms are gone off the top of the pumpkins and the berry bush in the back is all trampled down and everything," said Zoey Johnson, of Belle Vernon.

They plan to hibernate until the bear is gone.

"I would have passed out if I came out and saw a 400-pound bear," said Jerry Nusser, of Belle Vernon.

"I always go up the mountain looking for bears and here they are in my own backyard," added Zborovancik.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission was unaware of the sighting.
