Youngwood Homeowners Wake Up To Truck Smashed Into Porch

WESTMORELAND COUNTY (KDKA) – It was not a good morning for the people living in a house along Third Street in Youngwood.

"Laying in bed, I hear a loud crash," said resident Scott Shroyer.

"I got up and screamed 'Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god!'" said Amy Shroyer.

Around 5 a.m., Scott and Amy Shroyer had their world literally rocked when an out of control pick-up truck flew off Third Street and right into their home.

"Pick-up truck got tapped to the rear, got put into a spin," said Youngwood Fire Chief Lloyd Crago, "up into the house, up the bank into the house … there was debris everywhere."

The driver of the truck was hurt and was lying halfway out of the cab. The operator of the other vehicle stopped to help.

Meanwhile, the fire department showed up to help the injured and the Shroyer's sagging and battered porch.

"They shored up the front porch, 'cause it was starting to sag," Scott Shroyer said. "It possibly could've collapsed."

After the truck tore through the porch, it kept going for a while, eventually stopping right on the corner of the next house. You can still see the impact point and it's a good thing it stopped because there was someone sleeping right on the other side of the outside wall.

The accident really did a number on the Shroyer's porch and is one of many similar accidents along Third Street – also known as the Youngwood drag strip.

"The dreaded straightaways in Youngwood, people can't negotiate the straightaways in town," Crago said.
The driver of the pick-up suffered minor injuries and is expected to be OK.

No word on any charges related to the accident, but Amy Shroyer is trying to keep her chin up about the whole thing.

"We're in the process of remodeling the kitchen," she said, "and putting siding on, so now we'll get a new porch."
