Alleged Drug Deal Prompted Chase, Crash In Lawrenceville

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Two men who authorities say tried to rob their drug dealer set off a dramatic chain of events that unfolded late last night.

Police say it began shortly before 11 p.m. in Stanton Heights.

Two men tried to rob the alleged drug dealer and his friend, investigators said. The pair resisted and were forced at gunpoint to drive to the home of the drug dealer's girlfriend.

She too was forced into the car at gunpoint.

Police say at some point the drug dealer and his friend jumped out of the moving car.

Eventually, police began pursuing the car.

They followed it from Stanton Avenue onto McCandless Avenue in Lawrenceville where it crashed into another car and rolled over.

"It was just like a loud bang, like 'boom.' It sounded like somebody was scrapping metal against the concrete," said Princess Hughes, a witness.

The two suspects ran away from the wrecked car.

The woman suffered a sprained ankle and had to be cut out of the vehicle.

She spent hours telling police varying versions of what happened.

"We thought they all should have been dead," said Hughes. "It was crazy; all four wheels was up in the air, it looked like the vehicle was going to blow up."

Police caught up with the suspects after a brief foot chase.

No charges have been filed.

"We're kind of used to stuff happening out here," added Hughes, "but I have children and I don't want anything to happen to my children, so when it happened, it was like, 'What happened now?' Cause it sounded like somebody got killed."
