Man Wanted After Attempted Robbery With Toy Gun

DERRY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - State Police say the man who walked into a Derry Township Red Apple had a fake gun, but his intentions were real and somebody inside ended up getting hurt.

According to police, the incident happened around 1 a.m. at the Red Apple gas station and convenience store on Route 217.

"An individual walks into the Red Apple He's armed with a plastic camouflaged what looks like an assault rifle," Trooper Steve Limani said.

What looked like an armed robbery took a strange turn. Instead of going for the money, the suspect went on the attack.

"As soon as he walks in, he basically attacks a patron that happened to be standing there. It was a very violent encounter. It happens very quickly," Trooper Limani said.

Holding the gun backwards at one point, the hooded assailant assaulted the patron and pushed the man into a display. The robber's plan fell apart quickly and that's not all.

"The gun breaks during the struggle," Limani said.

The would-be robber then grabs his toy and heads out, but not before he tries to land one more blow to the patron.

"He tries to hit him with an elbow as he fleeing out of the store," Trooper Limani said.

The suspect didn't get any money and real gun or not, the individual will face attempted armed robbery charges.

When it comes to bad luck, the patron was also in the store the last time it was robbed.

Anybody with information about this incident is asked to call State Police.
