Several Closures & Changes In Effect As Deep Freeze Settles In

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The extreme cold forced hundreds of schools, businesses and government offices to close their doors today, but there is help if you need to get warm.

Warming centers are being set up across the region giving people a place to go to get out of the bitter cold weather.

You can get a full list of the warming centers with contact information here.

Doctors say the warming centers are very important because frostbite can set in in minutes. In some cases, it can even cause permanent damage.

"They do look like burns and that's actually how we treat most frostbite. Severe frostbite, you need immediate attention on the frostbite and we need to rewarm the area. But also, treat them like burns so some actually need to go on and have skin grafts based on the depth of the burn," Dr. David Ondrako said.

If you have to go outside, limit the time you spend out in this cold air and dress in layers.

The City of Pittsburgh is trying to help that cause as well and there are several changes to be aware of.

Allegheny County courts are closed, including common pleas, city court and all district magistrates' offices.

Also, there is no garbage collection today in the City of Pittsburgh.
